What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows the island of Sicily photographed at night from space, appearing as a luminous silhouette against an absolute black background. The triangular shape of the island dominates the frame diagonally, with its eastern tip pointing to the right and the northern coast at the top. The sea is not rendered as blue but as dark void; coastlines are revealed only by the density of lights. Hundreds of golden, amber and warm white dots and filaments trace cities, roads and villages: the coastline is densely dotted, while the interior remains darker and speckled with small isolated clusters. In the southeast a larger, more concentrated glow marks a major urban area. In the upper right corner a tiny, faint patch hints at the Italian peninsula, the very tip of the boot. No clouds are visible. The texture is grainy with electric brilliance, soft halos around urban cores and a sense of infinite depth created by the contrast between human light and the darkness of the Mediterranean and outer space.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First trace the luminous outline of the island to recognize its characteristic triangular shape. Then compare the brightly lit coastline with the dark, almost empty interior and look for the thin threads that link villages. End at the upper right corner and try to spot the faint fragment of Calabria; that small detail confirms the orbital scale.

Photograph catalogued as ISS040-E-087275, taken on 1 August 2014 by a member of Expedition 40 aboard the International Space Station, from 221 nautical miles above Earth. According to the NASA caption, much of the Italian island and province of Sicily is visible in this nighttime nadir view, and the tip of the toe of Italy's boot is barely visible in the upper right corner. Credit is given to NASA / JSC and the associated author is astronaut Alex Gerst. The image belongs to the Earth observation and scientific photography category. No further details about camera or settings are provided in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso

From the Space Station, about 410 kilometres high, astronauts can make out the layout of streets and highways simply by their nighttime glow, turning each night photo into an unintentional map of human settlement.

  1. What does the uneven distribution of lights between coast and interior reveal about how we inhabit land?¿Qué nos dice la distribución desigual de luces entre la costa y el interior sobre cómo habitamos el territorio?

What holds me here is how fragile this record is. This nocturnal nadir view from 2014, taken from 221 nautical miles above, preserves the electric flicker of an entire island with no clouds to soften it. I see amber and golden halos spreading, filaments tracing roads and a darker interior dotted with isolated clusters. Its value is not only aesthetic: it documents how we inhabit the territory. The absolute black of the Mediterranean around it makes every light count like a brushstroke we must preserve untouched.

From the International Space Station, during Expedition 40, Sicily looks like a lit triangle floating in nothingness. I get my bearings: north at the top, the eastern tip to the right, and at the upper right corner, almost imperceptible, the tiny piece of Calabria, the tip of the boot. The dark is not blue sea, it is void and night. What shines are not stars, they are our cities. That denser glow to the southeast is people gathered together. Seeing it is understanding human geography from orbit.

It looks like Sicily is made of tiny yellow stars! But they are not real stars, they are the lights of houses and streets seen from very high up, from the space station. It is shaped like a triangle, like a giant pizza slice. Inside there are fewer little lights and along the edge there are lots, as if everyone wants to live near the sea. All the black is the sea at night and outer space. And at the top right a little bit of Italy peeks in.
