What you would seeLo que verías
The horizontal image is divided between the blackness of space above and a dark, curved Earth below. The planet's limb draws a gentle arc from left to right, edged by a very thin, faintly golden and greenish line of atmosphere. Above it, a huge aurora unfolds like a translucent curtain: intense lime-green bands with softer, milky edges rise and bend toward the right, ending in irregular swirls and folds of light. Fine vertical rays cut through the curtain, some almost white where they are brightest, especially on the left side, where several tongues of light seem to drip toward the surface. Over the green glows a deep red, diffuse fringe that fades into the black sky. Scattered there are tiny white stars, barely visible. Below, Earth's night surface is not fully black: it is veiled in green by the aurora's reflection and light, revealing a fine, grainy, almost fabric-like texture that suggests clouds. There are no people, buildings, or landmarks; the scale is planetary and the scene feels silent, smooth, and slightly blurred, as one would expect from a moving orbital photograph.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the Earth's curved horizon, then follow the aurora's rays as if they were curtains hanging toward the surface. Notice the thin reddish fringe above the green: that color shift changes the image from a pretty glow into evidence of layers in the upper atmosphere. Finally, look for the tiny stars and the dim texture of clouds or land below.
ContextContexto
According to NASA Image and Video Library data, this frame belongs to a time-lapse sequence (ISS040E117497 through ISS040E118044) recorded during a night pass on August 27, 2014, by the Expedition 40 crew aboard the International Space Station. The file identifies it as “TL SUPER Aurora 4 – from DC-1” and credits NASA/JSC and Alex Gerst. The exact region of Earth shown is not stated in the source data, so it is not known from this record alone. Auroras occur when charged particles from space interact with gases in the upper atmosphere near the magnetic poles.
Certainty of this context: high. Written by an AI model (muse-wonder-1.0) looking at the image and the source record; when in doubt, trust the source.Certeza de este contexto: alta. Curious detailDato curioso
The green color of most auroras is produced mainly by oxygen roughly 100 to 240 kilometers above Earth; the rarer red tones appear at even greater heights, which is why they form a fringe above the green here.

I pause on how fragile this image feels, taken from the Space Station on August 27, 2014. That thin, golden and greenish rim above Earth is the atmospheric limb, and above it the aurora floats like a curtain with milky soft edges. I notice how the most intense lime green gathers on the left, with almost white tongues of light dripping downward. The shot is soft and slightly blurry from the spacecraft motion, which makes the folds and swirls on the right feel even more delicate and fleeting.

What you see is a huge aurora photographed from Expedition 40, in the sequence NASA catalogs as TL SUPER Aurora 4 – from DC-1. The green curtain rises above Earths dark curve and shows very fine vertical rays crossing through it. Above the green there is a deep, diffuse red band fading into the black of space dotted with tiny stars. We do not know which exact region lies below, only a nighttime surface veiled by clouds with a grainy texture. It is solar particles colliding with gases in the upper atmosphere, near the magnetic poles.

It looks like a giant ghost in space! Earth is down below, dark and curved like a ball, and above everything is black with tiny little stars. In the middle there is a bright green curtain that bends and swirls to the right, as if someone were shaking it. On the left it shines stronger, almost white, and drips downward. And above the green there is a little red like a small blanket. Everything looks really soft and blurry, as if the photo was taken while the spaceship was moving super fast and quietly.
