What you would seeLo que verías
Oblique daytime view of Earth from low orbit, with the planet's curvature defining the upper horizon. In the upper left corner a fragment of the International Space Station appears: a silvery-grey solar array with a grid-like structure and a white hull section, sharply cut against the deep black of space. Below stretches the Mediterranean Sea, deep intense blue in the west and lighter toward the east. Dominating the center is the elongated Italian Peninsula, rendered in ochre, muted green and brown tones that reveal mountainous relief and valleys; the Apennines run along its spine. To the north the Alps stand out with bright white snow and a rugged texture, contrasting with the flat plains of the Po Valley. Puffy white clouds with soft shadows cover part of northern Italy and southeastern France. The atmosphere is visible as a thin luminous blue rim hugging Earth's limb. The scale is continental, yet indented coastlines, islands like Corsica and Sardinia, and faint greyish urban patches remain discernible. Light is clear and high, creating crisp shadows on the topography.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the station hardware in the upper left to anchor the human viewpoint in orbit. Then follow the boot of Italy from north to south and let the white of the Alps guide you back to the curved horizon. Notice how the thin blue line of the atmosphere reframes the landscape as delicate and enclosed.
ContextContexto
Photograph taken on September 2, 2014 during a daytime pass by the Expedition 40 crew aboard the International Space Station, credited to NASA/JSC and astronaut Alex Gerst. According to the source description, the image was shared on the crewmember's Flickr page as «From Spain to Italy in a single glimpse». It belongs to the series of Earth Observations made from the ISS to document geographic, atmospheric and human features. No further details about camera equipment are provided in the source. The view shows the central Mediterranean region, including Italy, the Alps, Corsica and Sardinia, southern France and parts of the Balkans and the Adriatic Sea.

Curious detailDato curioso
Earth observation photos from the ISS are taken from about 400 km altitude at roughly 28,000 km per hour, allowing an entire country like Italy to be captured in a single frame.

If you look closely you will see how light reveals textures I care for in photos like this: the rough white of the snow-covered Alps contrasts with the ochre and muted green of the Italian peninsula and its Apennines, and the deep blue of the Mediterranean turns paler toward the east. I am drawn to that thin luminous band of atmosphere over the curved horizon, so fragile, and to the cut-off silver-gray solar panel of the International Space Station that reminds us this image is also an object that ages and needs conservation.

From low orbit aboard the International Space Station, astronaut Alex Gerst captured this daytime view on September 2, 2014 during Expedition 40. What excites me is the continental scale: Italy at the center with the Apennines forming its spine, the snow-capped Alps to the north, the Mediterranean and Adriatic around it, and Corsica and Sardinia cut out in the sea. At the upper left the solar panel and white hull of the station appear against the black of space, and at the edge the atmosphere looks like a very thin blue veil.

It looks like Earth is a giant marble seen from a space station window! In the middle is Italy like a long boot in ochre color with a little mountain line in the center, and on top it has a white snowy hat which is the Alps. The sea looks dark blue on one side and light blue on the other, and there are fluffy little clouds like cotton over the north. In the corner a little gray piece of the Space Station peeks in with its solar panel, as if waving at us from the black space.
