What you would seeLo que verías

The image presents an oblique, high-altitude view of Earth from space, dominated by a vast spiral cloud system filling most of the upper half of the frame. At center and toward the right, a dense mass of white and soft gray clouds spreads outward, its cotton-like texture marked by feathery, streaked edges curling counterclockwise to form the body of the hurricane. A faint, partially cloud-covered eye is suggested within the spiral. Below, the deep blue Atlantic Ocean is dotted with scattered small white cumulus clouds, and near the lower center the turquoise and sandy tones of Caribbean islands emerge through the marine haze. Along the upper edge the planet curves into the horizon, where a thin pale blue line of atmosphere separates Earth from the absolute black of space. Bright sunlight illuminates the cloud tops, casting subtle shadows and creating strong contrast between the brilliant storm and the dark ocean and cosmos. The scale is planetary, conveying both the immense power of the weather system and the thin fragility of the atmosphere.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the large white swirl and follow its outer bands to the curved horizon. Then lower your gaze to the deep blue ocean to spot the small islands beneath the storm; that shift in scale reveals the true size of the hurricane.

ContextContexto

The photograph was taken on September 16, 2014 by a crewmember of Expedition 41 aboard the International Space Station, according to data from the NASA Image and Video Library with credit to the Johnson Space Center. It shows Hurricane Edouard over the Atlantic Ocean. It is classified as a scientific photograph and Earth observation from low Earth orbit, a routine activity for crews documenting meteorological events. Edouard was the first major hurricane of the 2014 Atlantic season and remained over open water as an intense system, which makes this image a representative record of a well-structured cyclone seen from space.

Curious detailDato curioso

Photographs of hurricanes taken from the International Space Station are used for both public outreach and to complement meteorological satellite data, as the human oblique view highlights cloud texture and height.

What moves me most is that cottony texture of the spiral clouds, so white and gray, with frayed edges spinning over the deep blue Atlantic. From my craft I see delicate layers, sunlight creating soft shadows and a fragile contrast between the brightness of the cyclone and the blackness of space. I know it was captured on September 16, 2014 from the International Space Station, and I think about how vulnerable that thin blue line of the atmosphere is that protects life.

For me this is a lesson in orbital meteorology. I see Hurricane Edouard forming a huge counterclockwise spiral over the Atlantic, with its eye partly covered by high clouds. I am fascinated by the curved limb of Earth at the top, that thin light blue band over absolute black. Taken by Expedition 41, it reminds me that the station orbits about 400 kilometers up and is a privileged lookout. It was the first major hurricane of 2014 and here you grasp its planetary scale.

It looks like a giant swirl of ice cream! The white clouds spin and spin as if someone is stirring the sea. Below you see the dark blue ocean with tiny little Caribbean islands that look like speckles. Up top is the prettiest part, a little light blue stripe that is the air we breathe and then the all-black of space. Hurricane Edouard looks a bit scary because it is so huge, but it also looks beautiful from the space station window.
