What you would seeLo que verías
A top-down, slightly oblique view of a colossal cloud vortex filling the entire frame. At the precise center lies the hurricane eye, a dark oval opening where the deep blue of the ocean and the shadow of towering cloud walls are visible. Surrounding it, the eyewall forms a thick, puffy ring in whitish and grey tones, with a cotton-like, softly textured surface marked by fine radial streaks that imply rapid circular motion. From this ring, spiral cloud bands unfurl clockwise, with delicate swirls and translucent veils blending into the surrounding overcast. The palette is near monochrome: whites, pearl greys and bluish greys, punctuated by the small, intense patch of navy and charcoal blue inside the eye. Light is even and diffused, typical of the upper atmosphere, with no harsh shadows except the soft gloom within the eye itself. No land, horizon or human presence appears; only the vast atmospheric sea above the ocean. The image conveys planetary scale and an uncanny stillness despite the storm's power. Fine details include thread-like filaments stretched by wind and subtle notches along the inner edge of the eyewall.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the dark central spot and let your gaze spiral outward along the cloud bands. Notice how the texture shifts from the dense, cottony eyewall to thinner, wispy streaks. Look closely at the tiny blue patch at the bottom of the eye: it is the ocean surface glimpsed through miles of vertical cloud.

Photograph taken on 16 September 2014 at 13:52:40 GMT by astronaut Alex Gerst of Expedition 41 aboard the International Space Station, according to NASA/JSC records. Catalogued as ISS041-E-011536 and shot with a 200mm lens, it shows the eye of Hurricane Edouard over the Atlantic Ocean. At the time it was a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 105 miles per hour, churning several hundred miles southeast of Bermuda without making landfall. The crew documented the storm in a series of images shared via downlink and social media.

Curious detailDato curioso
Astronaut photos from the International Space Station are taken with off-the-shelf DSLR cameras with long lenses, and NASA archives them with precise time and location data for both public outreach and scientific reference.

Through my eyes I pause on the texture of the eyewall, that spongy whitish grey ring with radial striations that looks like carded cotton stretched by wind. The almost monochromatic palette of whites, pearl greys and soft blues shows an even, diffuse light from the high atmosphere, with no hard shadows except the half-light inside the eye. I notice the fine thread-like filaments and the small punch of deep navy blue from the ocean, which lets us read the planetary scale of the image without altering its origin.

What fascinates me is the slightly oblique top-down view from the International Space Station, hundreds of kilometers above the Atlantic. I see the full vortex filling the frame, spinning clockwise with spiral bands curling around the eye. That dark oval in the center is the ocean peeking through the clouds, photographed on September 16, 2014 by Alex Gerst with a 200 mm lens. It is live science, with no horizon or land in sight, just atmosphere in motion captured from orbit.

It looks like a giant snail made of clouds or a swirling cotton candy in the sky. In the middle it has a little dark hole that is the eye, and through it you can see the deep blue sea like a tiny eye looking up at us. Around it there are white and grey rings with little streaks that keep spinning and spinning like when you stir chocolate milk. There are no houses or people, just soft clouds and the sea, and it makes me feel that Earth is huge and calm even though there is a lot of wind inside.
