What you would seeLo que verías

The image presents a high-altitude, top-down view of the core of a massive hurricane. The composition is dominated by a well-defined circular eye, offset to the right of the frame, encircled by a thick, textured ring of white and pale gray clouds forming the eyewall. Inside the eye, a dark void appears in deep bluish-gray tones, contrasting sharply with the surrounding bright white, with hints of the underlying ocean or land surface and internal shadows visible. Around it, spiral cloud bands extend outward in concentric swirls, showing subtle variations in tone and density: some areas look puffy and cotton-like and densely packed, others more stretched and fibrous from high winds. The palette is nearly monochrome, ranging from whites to soft grays and muted blues, lit by even, diffuse daylight. There is no horizon or human reference; the scale feels planetary and overwhelming. Fine filaments and shadowed folds within the eyewall reveal depth and motion, while the rest of the field suggests the continuous immensity of the cloud system filling the frame.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the dark eye on the right and trace the bright ring that encloses it. Then follow the spiral bands expanding toward the edges and notice the contrast between the apparent stillness of the center and the turbulent texture of the wall. Linger on the inner shadows of the eye, where the pattern stops being abstract and the surface below becomes perceptible.

Image cataloged as iss057e023121, taken on October 10, 2018 from the International Space Station and credited to JSC/NASA. According to source data, it shows Hurricane Michael after landfall as a Category 4 hurricane over the Florida panhandle, with maximum sustained winds near 145 mph and dangerous storm surge and heavy rain expected. The photograph is part of the NASA Image and Video Library and exemplifies scientific Earth observation imagery from orbit. The specific crew photographer and camera are not listed, but the overhead framing is typical of meteorological documentation from the ISS.

Curious detailDato curioso

Hurricane Michael was later reanalyzed as a Category 5 at landfall, the first on record to strike the Florida panhandle at that intensity, and its eye was photographed from the ISS at roughly 400 km altitude.

From my worktable I am struck by how well the visual information is preserved despite this being an orbital shot from 2018. I observe the circular eye shifted to the right, surrounded by the thick wall of white and greyish clouds with a texture like compressed cotton. I am interested in the subtle variations between pure white, pale greys and the deep bluish grey inside, where even daylight reveals shadows and relief. It is a scientific image, with no horizon or human figure, that documents the planetary scale of the phenomenon.

What excites me most is the top-down viewpoint from the International Space Station, as if we were looking at the planet from another world. The eye appears as a perfect dark circle, cut out against the bright ring of the eyewall and the spiral bands spinning around it. It reminds me that, although we love to observe distant stars, here we are watching the weather of our own planet in motion. The shot from October 10, 2018 turns Hurricane Michael into a visible laboratory of atmosphere and energy on a giant scale.

It looks like a giant snail made of clouds! I see a dark round hole right on the right side, as if someone poked a little hole with a finger in a white and grey meringue cake. Around it there is a fluffy ring and many swirls that spin and spin like cotton whirlpools. Everything is white, light grey and dull blue, lit by the sun. There are no people or houses, just huge clouds. I am curious to think that inside that circle you can see a little piece of the sea down there, very calm.
