What you would seeLo que verías
A slightly oblique top-down view shows a vast desert surface filling the entire frame, with no sky, horizon, people, or reference objects. In the center sits a large, irregular dark patch in blue-gray, almost black, with softly frayed edges; it vaguely suggests an oval puddle or a shadow cast onto the ground. Left of its center rises a small pale cone with a broken crater ring: its rim looks whitish and beige, with two or three dark hollows inside, like tiny craters within the crater. To the left, partly overlapping the dark field, there is another much fainter circular form, veined and dusty, almost erased by sand. All around stretches the Sahara in peach, tan, cream, and pale orange tones. The light is even and diffuse, without sharp shadows, and it reveals fine textures: wispy streaks across the lower left, grainy areas, subtle veins, and soft gradients of dust. The dark field, by contrast, appears smoother and denser, with slight variations in blue-gray. The scale is disorienting: what looks like a small stain could be an enormous terrain, and only the absence of familiar references makes it seem like an abstract painting.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the dark patch in the middle: at first it looks like a shadow or a stain on sand. Then move to the small pale ring left of center and to the other, fainter circle on the left edge; those rings change it from abstraction into a volcanic landscape. Finally, follow the fine streaks in the surrounding sand to sense wind, erosion, and scale.

According to NASA Image and Video Library, this photograph (iss065e009516) was taken on April 29, 2021, by Shannon Walker of Expedition 65, from the International Space Station while it orbited 263 miles above the Sahara Desert. It shows Waw an Namus, an isolated volcanic crater in Libya, with three small saltwater lakes noted in the source description. At this distance, those lakes are not clearly distinguishable as separate bodies of water. The dark ground around the central cone is consistent with volcanic material contrasting with the much lighter desert sand. Credit: NASA/JSC.

Curious detailDato curioso
The 263 miles mentioned by NASA are about 423 kilometers: from that height, a volcanic complex reads less like a mountain and more like a dark stain with a tiny ring at its center.

From my workbench I notice textures and how the fragile lives alongside the permanent. The central dark field is smooth and dense, almost velvety, contrasting with sand that looks like fine dust covered in streaks and veins. I am drawn to that pale cone with its broken ring and tiny hollows, like chipped porcelain. The even light leaves no hard shadows, but the peach and cream nuances would need very delicate visual cleaning to preserve every subtle gradient.

What excites me most is the shift in scale. This was photographed on April 29, 2021 by Shannon Walker from the International Space Station at 263 miles above the Sahara. From there, an isolated volcanic crater in Libya, Waw an Namus, looks like a tiny abstract stain. The dark volcanic material surrounds the central cone and contrasts with the pale desert. The three small salty lakes mentioned in the record cannot even be distinguished, and that reminds me how limited our eye is compared to the planet.

It looks like a giant painting made with peach and cream colored sand. In the middle there is a dark stain like a puddle of bluish gray ink with fluffy edges. Inside it has a little beige volcano with its broken crater and two or three dark dots that look like curious eyes. On the left there is another almost erased circle, as if someone blew on it. I like it because you cannot tell if it is tiny or huge, and I have to guess what it is.
