What you would seeLo que verías
At the exact center of the image, a brilliant white-gold point breaks the darkness: the sun rising over the curved limb of Earth. Its light blooms into a warm halo of gold and orange that spills across an extremely thin horizontal band stretching edge to edge. That band is the atmosphere in profile: at the bottom, a sharp, narrow line of coppery orange; above it, a broader ribbon of electric blue and pale cyan that fades into black. Below this glowing edge, Earth is a vast, velvety black mass occupying the lower half of the frame, with no visible city lights, clouds or landforms, smooth and uniform. Above, space is a deep, empty black filling the upper half. No distinct stars are visible, only the soft diffusion of sunlight creating a gentle flare and warm haze around the solar disk. The composition is strictly horizontal and symmetrical, with the horizon line dividing dark Earth from dark space. Texture is both ethereal and crisp: the smooth gradient of atmospheric color contrasts with the hard, intense brilliance of the sun. The scale feels planetary, revealing the atmosphere as a fragile, paper-thin shell over immense darkness.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the white-gold sun and let your eye travel along the horizon line to both edges. Then notice the subtle shift from orange to blue in the atmosphere; that thin ribbon is the entire breathable layer of the planet.
ContextContexto
Photograph taken on May 2, 2021 from the International Space Station while orbiting about 264 miles above Shenzhen, China, according to NASA data. It is catalogued as iss065e013242 in the NASA Image and Video Library with credit to JSC. It documents an orbital sunrise, the moment the sun clears Earth’s limb as seen from low Earth orbit. Crew members aboard the station experience about 16 sunrises and sunsets per day due to orbital velocity. No individual photographer is listed beyond the institutional credit.

Curious detailDato curioso
The International Space Station completes an orbit in about 93 minutes, so its crew witnesses roughly 16 orbital sunrises and sunsets every 24 hours.

What stops me is that very thin band crossing the image. It is the atmosphere seen edge-on and it says everything about fragility. Below, a fine copper orange line, above an electric blue that dissolves into the black of space. In the center, the white point of the sun pierces that boundary with a golden halo. Everything that protects life fits inside that gradient. It makes me think about how little separates total darkness from light.

We are seeing an orbital sunrise photographed on May 2, 2021 from the International Space Station, about 425 kilometers above Shenzhen. The sun emerges just over the Earth's limb and its light tints the atmosphere in two layers: orange below and pale blue above. From that orbit astronauts see about 16 sunrises per day because of how fast they travel. Here Earth is a black mass with no cities or clouds visible, and space fills the other half. It is science and wonder at once.

It looks like Earth is sleeping with a little blanket of light. Below everything is black like velvet and above it is also black but it is outer space. In the middle there is a tiny orange and blue stripe that is the air, and it is super thin! And right in the center the sun comes out like a very bright white dot with golden light around it. I like it because the sun seems to be saying good morning to the whole planet at once.
