What you would seeLo que verías
The image captures the precise moment of a sunrise as seen from Earth orbit, composed in a strong horizontal format dominated by the planet's curvature. In the lower right corner, the sun appears as an intensely bright, flattened oval of white and gold, half-emerged above the horizon, surrounded by a glowing halo of orange and deep red that spills into the darkness. The edge of Earth is a thin, slightly irregular line textured by cloud tops, dividing the blackness below from the atmosphere above. Layered above this edge are smooth, horizontal bands of color that mark atmospheric layers: first a burnt orange and amber glow, then a pale whitish-blue, followed by a vivid electric blue and a deep indigo that fades into the black of space at the top of the frame. To the left, the bands become softer and more diffuse. Sunlight tints the lower edge with a thin red rim and creates a vertical gradient from dark reddish tones near the horizon to cool blues above. No stars are visible; the texture is clean with a gentle atmospheric haze and extreme contrast between light and shadow, conveying immense scale and stillness.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin with the sun in the lower right and trace the thin horizon line to the left to appreciate Earth's curvature. Then move your eyes upward through the color bands to see how the atmosphere shifts from orange to intense blue to the blackness of space. Notice the contrast between the warm brilliance of the rising sun and the velvety darkness filling most of the frame.
ContextContexto
The photograph, catalogued as iss066e091822, was taken on December 17, 2021, from the International Space Station while it orbited approximately 262 miles — about 422 kilometers — above Bolivia in South America, according to NASA's Image and Video Library description. Credit is given to the Johnson Space Center (JSC). It is classified as a scientific photograph and image in the Space and science category. It shows an orbital sunrise, an event crew members aboard the station witness about 16 times per day due to orbital velocity. The source does not list an individual astronaut photographer or camera settings.

Curious detailDato curioso
The International Space Station travels at about 17,500 miles per hour and circles Earth every 90 minutes, so its crew experiences 16 sunrises every 24 hours.

The conservatorLa restauradora
From my perspective as a restorer I focus on how light is preserved in layers. I see that white and golden oval in the lower right corner and its orange halo spilling over the darkness. I notice the jagged band of clouds marking the horizon and the horizontal bands going from burnt orange to pale white and electric blue into the black of space. It is a clean image, with extreme contrast and a vertical gradient that should be preserved without retouching its silence.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
For me this photo is a reminder of what it means to orbit Earth. It was taken on December 17, 2021 from the International Space Station about 422 kilometers over Bolivia. That half-emerged sun is one of the 16 sunrises astronauts see each day due to orbital speed. What excites me most are the atmospheric layers visible as bands of color, from amber to deep indigo, revealing the thin skin that protects us against the immense blackness.

It looks like a giant painting made with bright markers! The sun is like a golden egg peeking from the corner and painting everything orange and red. I like the spiky line that is the clouds and how above the sky goes from light blue to strong blue until it turns black like at night. There are no stars but it feels very huge and quiet, like floating and watching the world wake up slowly.
