What you would seeLo que verías
The image captures the curve of the Earth as seen from space, with the absolute black of outer space filling the top edge. A thin, glowing blue line marks the atmosphere, brighter and more diffuse along the horizon. In the lower foreground stretches a vast arid landmass in shades of ochre, terracotta, grayish brown and pale beige, with mottled textures suggesting plains, dry riverbeds and dune fields. The coastline of the Namib Desert forms a sinuous, pale border where land meets the deep, intense blue of the Atlantic Ocean. Toward the north, the coastal strip turns more reddish and orange. In the background, over the ocean and toward the curved horizon, lie banks of white and gray clouds, fluffy and fragmented, casting subtle shadows on the water. The light is crisp orbital sunlight, unfiltered, softly revealing relief and emphasizing the contrast between the dry desert, the sea and the darkness of space. The scale is planetary, encompassing hundreds of kilometers in a single view.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the black edge of space and move down to the blue halo of the atmosphere to sense how thin the habitable layer is. Then trace the Namib coastline where ochre meets deep blue; notice how the desert shifts from gray to reddish tones. Finally look at the scattered clouds over the ocean that emphasize the planet's curvature.
ContextContexto
Photograph taken on April 24, 2022 from the International Space Station while orbiting about 264 miles —around 425 kilometers— above Earth, according to NASA's description. It shows the Namib Desert on the Atlantic coast of Namibia in southwestern Africa. Catalogued as iss067e033271 by the Johnson Space Center (JSC), it belongs to NASA's Earth observation archive from the ISS. Such orbital views help document geographical features, atmospheric dynamics and coastal zones. No individual photographer is listed; credit is given to NASA/JSC.

Curious detailDato curioso
The Namib Desert is considered one of the oldest deserts on Earth, estimated to be between 55 and 80 million years old, and its coastal dunes are visible even from low Earth orbit.

The conservatorLa restauradora
From my perspective as a conservator I focus on how the sharp orbital light reveals every nuance of the desert without atmospheric filter. I see ochres, terracottas, grayish browns and pale beige forming mottled textures of plains and dunes. The thin blue line of the atmosphere above the blackness of space reminds me how fragile what we protect truly is. The pale coastline separating the arid land from the deep blue Atlantic looks like a delicate seam we must preserve.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
As an amateur astronomer I am thrilled by this view taken on April 24, 2022 from the International Space Station at about 425 kilometers high. Here you grasp the planetary scale, hundreds of kilometers of the Namib Desert in Namibia next to the Atlantic. I love seeing the curvature of Earth and that luminous, diffuse blue band that is the atmosphere on the horizon. The white clouds over the ocean and the contrast with the absolute black of space show we live on a fragile island.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like Earth is a giant marble seen from a space window! Down below I see a desert that looks like modeling clay with colors like milky coffee, orange and beige, all spotty and wrinkly. There is a bright blue little line that is the air we breathe and above everything is super black like nighttime. The sea is a very strong blue and a pale line separates it from the sand. I like to imagine the clouds are cotton balls floating over the water.
