What you would seeLo que verías

The image is divided into two great horizontal zones by the gentle curve of Earth. The upper half is the blackness of space, nearly solid at the corners and sprinkled with small, faint stars, some white and a few slightly blue or yellowish. The lower half is the planet's surface, still in half-light, covered by a layer of clouds over a dark ocean that is barely distinguishable. The clouds range from dense, mottled patches in the lower-left to a long, wispy, almost translucent streak running diagonally across the center-right. Between the two zones runs the true subject of the photograph: a thin, intensely luminous band that traces the terrestrial limb. Closest to the surface is a line of orange-red, above it a strip that dissolves into bright white at the center, and higher still a cool blue that fades into a very faint greenish and brownish halo before disappearing into the dark. On the left, right on the line of the horizon, a tiny white dot stands out. There are no people, spacecraft, or continents to give a sense of scale; only curvature, light, and texture suggest the immensity of what is being seen. The overall feeling is one of silence and suspension.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the thin line of color that cuts across the frame; it is what separates night from day. Then look down at the clouds, still dim, and up at the stars that are about to fade. The small bright dot on the left side of the horizon makes the vastness feel even greater.

I pause on that luminous band at the horizon, because that is where the fragility of the piece lies. I see a reddish orange line attached to the surface, then an intense white and a cold blue that fades into a greenish and brownish halo. The contrast between the solid blackness of space and the penumbra of the mottled clouds below requires preserving every nuance. That vaporous streak crossing diagonally is not damage, it is illuminated atmosphere, and its transparency is key to understanding the image.

What excites me is recognizing a sunrise seen from 430 kilometers high, 267 miles over the southern Pacific Ocean. The record says it was on August 13, 2022 from the International Space Station, cataloged as iss067e264803. Above, the blackness speckled with white, bluish and yellowish stars; below, the Earth in twilight shadow. And just above the horizon on the left, that tiny white dot that invites us to wonder what celestial body is peeking through at that moment.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the Earth is asleep and covered with a blanket of clouds. Down on the left the clouds look like fluffy little balls and in the middle there is a long tail of vapor crossing like smoke. Up top everything is black with tiny sparkles of stars. In the middle there is a pretty little line of colors, first reddish orange, then white and then blue, like a rainbow lying down. On the left there is a lonely little white dot that makes me feel that everything is huge and silent.
