What you would seeLo que verías
The image is an almost vertical aerial photograph of an island surrounded by open ocean. The landmass fills the center and left half of the frame, irregular and elongated from top to bottom, while the sea dominates the edges, especially the broad band on the right. With no horizon or nearby objects in the foreground, the main visual focus falls on two bright, roughly circular white patches over the summits. The larger one sits below center, with a tiny dark point at its middle; the smaller, softer one lies toward the upper part of the island. Around both, the ground slopes away in browns, rusty reds, and grays, scored by dark radial lines like grooves or old channels spreading outward from each peak. Along the left edge of the land, a dense bank of cottony white cloud covers part of the coast. To the right, over the ocean, hundreds of tiny cloudlets appear in loose rows, creating a speckled texture against the water. The sea is a deep, fairly even blue with faint glints of light. The illumination looks direct and daytime, without long shadows. No people, buildings, or text are visible; the scale becomes clear only from the island's sweep against the vast surrounding ocean.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the two white peaks and compare their size, shape, and central details. Then follow the dark lines radiating downhill and notice how they turn each volcano into a kind of star or fingerprint. Finally, look at the shoreline and the tiny clouds over the ocean to recover the island's immense scale.
ContextContexto
According to NASA's Image and Video Library, this photograph was taken on December 27, 2022, from the International Space Station while it orbited 258 miles — about 415 kilometers — above the Pacific Ocean. It shows the island of Hawaiʻi and two volcanoes: Mauna Kea, dormant, toward the upper part of the image, and Mauna Loa, active, toward the lower part. Both summits appear snow-covered. The credit is NASA/JSC and the source record gives no individual photographer's name. Although Hawaiʻi has a largely tropical climate, both peaks rise above 13,000 feet, so cold temperatures and occasional snow are possible at their summits.

Curious detailDato curioso
Mauna Kea is about 13,803 feet above sea level, but measured from its base on the ocean floor it exceeds 32,000 feet, making it taller base-to-peak than Mount Everest.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator, I am struck by the clarity of this photo taken on December 27, 2022 from the International Space Station. From about 415 kilometers above the Pacific, daylight reveals two snow-capped summits: Mauna Kea above, more diffuse, and Mauna Loa below, larger with a dark spot at its center. I focus on the reddish browns and grays of the slopes, with dark radial grooves, and how the white snow contrasts with the deep blue of the ocean. We must preserve such digital images as a testimony of the twenty-first century.

Seeing Hawaii from 258 miles up makes me feel I am in orbit with the crew. The NASA record says the photo has no individual photographer credit, it is collective work from the International Space Station. I can tell the two volcanoes are over 4,000 meters high: Mauna Kea, inactive, toward the top, and Mauna Loa, active, toward the bottom. Even though we imagine Hawaii as tropical, up there it is cold enough to snow. I love spotting the small dark dot in the center of the larger white patch and the rows of tiny clouds over the ocean.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like the island is floating in a giant blue pool! I see two scoops of snow like ice cream: a big one at the bottom with a little black dot in the middle and a smaller one at the top. Around them everything is brown, reddish and gray with little lines running down the mountain as if someone drew them. On the left there is a fluffy cloud covering the shore and on the right lots of tiny clouds make a dotted pattern. I wonder if it is very cold up there if there is snow in Hawaii.
