What you would seeLo que verías
The image presents a horizontal view of Earth’s limb as seen from orbit, with the planet filling the lower half and the blackness of space above. In the near-dark foreground, the tops of low clouds and the land surface appear in very deep brown and black tones, barely lit. Just above, a thin band of orange and amber marks the horizon where the sun is beginning to rise; its glow spreads sideways in a warm, diffused gradient. Above that line, atmospheric layers are stacked: a very fine whitish and pinkish veil, followed by an intense electric blue that deepens toward a velvety navy and finally into pure black space. The color transitions are smooth and almost painterly, with a hazy, luminous texture. No stars or human structures are visible, only the subtle curve of the atmosphere and the stark contrast between the dark Earth below and the emerging light. The illumination seems to bleed laterally, gilding cloud edges with golden highlights and creating a sense of quiet vastness.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the orange horizon line and move upward through the blue gradient into blackness. Then look down to the dark lower area to pick out cloud tops touched by early light. Notice the faint pinkish-white line separating warm glow from cool blue — it shows how thin the breathable atmosphere really is.

Look how fragile that orange line over the darkness is, it is the atmosphere and it looks like a very thin brushstroke on an almost black background. As a restorer I am struck by how the layers overlap: the dark brown of the earth, the amber of the horizon, then a pinkish veil and the electric blue that turns velvety. The photo is from 2023 from the International Space Station and although there is no physical damage, it reminds me how delicate that film of air that protects us is. We must preserve it as if it were original varnish.

What you see is a sunrise but not from your window, it is from 420 kilometers high over southern Brazil, captured by NASA on February 10, 2023 from the International Space Station. The lower half is Earth still in shadow with low clouds, and above is black space. In between, that orange band is the Sun peeking out and the whitish, pinkish and blue bands are layers of the atmosphere lit from the side. It is the Earth's limb, the curvature of our planet seen edge-on, with no stars or cities in sight.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like Earth is asleep and covered with a dark brown fluffy blanket that is the clouds. Above there is a little orange line as if someone turned on a tiny lamp on the edge. Then comes a pinkish ribbon and then a super pretty electric blue that turns black until it disappears. Everything is very dark until the light arrives and paints the sky. I like it because it looks like a cake with many layers of colors and nobody else is there, just Earth and space.

How many large zones can you count if you divide the image into dark earth below and black space above with the glowing atmosphere in between?
HintPista
Think of bottom, middle and top: the earth in shadow, the dawn light and the void.
