What you would seeLo que verías

The image captures Earth’s curvature as seen from space, with the horizon forming a sharp, luminous line that separates the darkness above from the glow below. In the foreground, the planet’s surface lies in deep twilight, nearly black, with faint, barely discernible textures of land and ocean beneath a veil of shadow. Toward the left of center, a compact cloud mass catches the grazing sunlight, its top glowing in warm gold and soft orange while its underside remains dark. This cloud casts a long, crisp, dark shadow onto a lower blanket of clouds, creating a striking diagonal contrast. The background transitions from the absolute black of space at the top to a thin electric-blue band and then to a broad, pearly white-gold radiance where the atmosphere is lit by the rising sun. Light is horizontal and diffused along the horizon, highlighting delicate gradients of pale blue, warm beige, and smoky gray. The overall scale feels vast and silent, with no human structures visible, emphasizing the thinness of the atmosphere and the quiet drama between light and shadow.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the bright horizon and trace the thin blue line of the atmosphere across the frame. Then focus on the small golden cloud and follow its long dark shadow. Observe how the low light turns flat cloud layers into a three-dimensional landscape.

ContextContexto

Photograph taken on October 13, 2023, from the International Space Station while orbiting about 260 miles above the Peru-Ecuador border in South America, according to NASA’s description. Catalogued as iss070e003364 and credited to JSC, it is part of the NASA Image and Video Library. It documents an orbital sunrise, an event crew members witness many times per day in low Earth orbit. The view shows low-angle sunlight casting elongated cloud shadows across cloud decks below, serving as both scientific documentation and Earth observation imagery. No individual photographer is named beyond the institutional credit.

Curious detailDato curioso

The International Space Station orbits Earth roughly every 90 minutes, allowing astronauts to see about 16 sunrises and sunsets in a 24-hour period.

I pause at how fragile everything looks from here. That thin white and blue band marking the horizon is our atmosphere, so delicate it seems it could be wiped away with a breath. Below everything lies in deep dusk, with ocean and land barely hinted, and yet a single cloud catches the sun and turns to gold. Its very long shadow on the lower layer reminds me how delicate grazing light is and how any trace remains visible.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This photo is pure orbital sunrise, something the crew sees many times a day at 260 miles high. What thrills me is the geometry of light: the sun is still below the horizon and already paints the top of a cloud mass orange while its shadow stretches for miles over other clouds. Seeing the sharp curvature, the black space above and the electric blue of the atmosphere below explains better than any diagram how low orbit works.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like Earth is asleep and just waking up! Up top everything is black as if it were night, and below there is a bright little line of blue and white which is the sunrise. There is a golden cloud that shines a lot, like a cotton castle with light, and it makes a super long shadow over other clouds. I like it because Earth looks nice and round and there is not a single person, just clouds and light playing.
