What you would seeLo que verías
The image captures the curved Earth from space, filling almost the entire frame beneath the deep black of outer space at the top. In the foreground stretches a vast arid terrain in ochre, reddish-brown, and sandy beige, cut by dark mountain ranges and eroded valleys that create a rugged, cracked texture. Toward the center and right, the land becomes darker and more densely vegetated, with elongated shadows emphasizing the topography. A thin, luminous blue line of atmosphere traces the curved horizon. Wispy, elongated white clouds drift above the terrain like brushstrokes of stretched cotton, casting soft shadows onto the ground below. In the lower right corner, a small patch of intense blue water appears at the edge of the frame. In the lower left, a whitish patch stands out, likely a salt flat. The light is natural and high, crisp and clear, with no visible human infrastructure at this scale, conveying both immensity and fragility.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the curved horizon and the thin blue line of the atmosphere, then let your gaze drift downward across the clouds and their shadows. Notice how the contrast between the pale desert and the dark mountain ridges reveals the topography, and look for the small glint of water on the right that anchors the immense scale.
ContextContexto
Cataloged as iss070e006918, this photograph was taken on October 19, 2023, from the International Space Station while orbiting about 257 miles above Earth, according to the NASA Image and Video Library and the Johnson Space Center (JSC). It depicts the southern portion of the Sonoran Desert in Mexico, a biodiverse desert ecosystem spanning northwestern Mexico and the southwestern United States. Such orbital images are part of NASA’s Earth observation program, which monitors geographic, climatic, and environmental change. No further details about the individual photographer are provided beyond the institutional JSC credit.

I look at how this orbital print preserves the delicacy of the ephemeral, that blue band that is our atmosphere feels like the most fragile varnish layer I have ever seen. The ochres, reddish browns and sandy beige of the desert contrast with the deep black of space and the white of the clouds. It moves me to record a landscape that is alive and changing, eroded by time. This record from October 19, 2023, taken at 257 miles altitude, asks us to care for it as we care for an old artwork, with respect for its fragility.

From the International Space Station, at 257 miles high, the curvature of Earth becomes evident and that fascinates me. I see the southern Sonoran Desert, that rugged texture of dark mountain ranges and eroded valleys in ochre and reddish tones. The elongated clouds cast shadows and the blue edge of the atmosphere marks the boundary between our world and the black of space. It is an orbital photograph from NASA's Earth observation program that reminds us how small we are and how immense the desert looks from above.

It looks like Earth is a giant ball! I see lots of wrinkly land in beige and reddish brown, like squished modeling clay. Up top everything is super black space and there is a bright blue line that is the air we breathe. There are little white clouds like stretched cotton making tiny shadows. At the bottom right there is a little blue piece of water and on the left a whitish spot that is a salt flat. It makes me feel like I am flying really really high with superpowers.
