What you would seeLo que verías
A high, slightly oblique orbital view of an earthly landscape dominated by a broad ring of white, puffy clouds forming an almost circular wreath at the center of the frame. At the heart of that ring, on dark ground in shades of volcanic brown and charcoal gray, the snow-capped summit of Kilimanjaro appears — small in scale yet luminous, its irregular white ice cap standing out sharply against the rock. Around it, a patchy veil of cumulus extends toward the background, with textures like torn cotton and soft shadows that give volume to the surface. In the lower left corner, a denser, more uniform mass of cloud partially veils the ground. The surrounding terrain, visible through gaps, shows arid plains speckled with faint agricultural patterns and subtle color shifts among ochre, muted green, and gray. Daylight is crisp and unfiltered, typical of space photography, enhancing contrast between icy whiteness, deep blue shadows, and earth tones. No human presence is visible; the scale is continental, emphasizing isolation of the peak within a sea of clouds.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the center and find the small bright gleam of the snowy summit. Then widen your gaze to the ring of clouds encircling it like a cotton crater. Finally notice how the clouds scatter over the plain and reveal the true scale of the mountain against the land.
ContextContexto
The photograph was taken on July 21, 2024, from the International Space Station while it orbited about 261 miles above the Indian Ocean off the coast of Tanzania, according to the NASA/JSC record. It depicts Mount Kilimanjaro, widely recognized as the highest mountain in Africa and the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, a stratovolcano with equatorial snowfields. The image is part of the NASA Image and Video Library as iss071e378517. Taken from orbit, it serves both scientific earth observation and public outreach, illustrating how space-based views turn weather and topography into striking patterns.

Curious detailDato curioso
Kilimanjaro consists of three volcanic cones — Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira — and its Uhuru Peak on Kibo’s crater rim reaches 5,895 meters above sea level despite lying only about 300 kilometers south of the equator.

The conservatorLa restauradora
What you see here is both delicate and fragile. That tiny, bright snow cap surrounded by an almost perfect ring of clouds is the summit of Kilimanjaro. As a conservator, that contrast worries me: the luminous white on dark volcanic rock is no longer permanent, it is thinning. The photo, taken from 418 kilometers above the Indian Ocean on July 21, 2024, freezes a moment that may never repeat exactly the same. Observing the soft shadows and the cotton-like texture of the cumulus clouds is also a way of caring for the planet's memory.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
From the International Space Station, 418 kilometers up, Earth becomes both map and poetry. Here Kilimanjaro looks like an island: its snowy summit floats in the center of a crown of white, fluffy clouds. It is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest freestanding mountain in the world, an equatorial stratovolcano with seemingly impossible snow. I love that this photo, cataloged as iss071e378517, was taken in crisp daylight, with no atmospheric filter, where every cumulus casts a shadow and reveals relief. It is pure science that also looks like artwork.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a giant donut made of clouds! In the middle there is a little white ball sprinkled with powdered sugar, that is the snow on Kilimanjaro. All around it is like shredded cotton floating above brown and ochre land. I like to imagine the clouds made a circle on purpose to protect the mountain, like they are playing hide and seek. Astronauts took this photo from their space house way, way up high, over the Indian Ocean. You cannot see a single person, just Earth breathing with its shadows and tiny patches of fields.
