What you would seeLo que verías

The image is dominated by a luminous, curved arc that crosses it horizontally, slightly below the center: the edge of Earth lit by a sunrise, so bright it becomes an almost pure white band. Above that line spreads a dark, mottled surface in deep blues, greens, and earthy browns, streaked with pale veils that suggest clouds and reflections on glass. Below the arc, by contrast, is the blackness of space, creating a disorienting feeling of inversion, as if the planet were floating overhead. At the center, the sun —hidden just behind the horizon— produces an intense glare, concentric halos, a large translucent circle of lens flare, and several small white orbs scattered like moons or bubbles. Faint scratches, smudges, and ghostly reflections reveal that we are looking through a window. Along the bottom edge runs the station itself in horizontal silhouette: metallic cylinders, wrinkled silver insulation, small antennas, structures in shadow, and a domed module lit from above. At the far left, the edge of a reddish-brown solar panel intrudes; at the right, a dark rectangular panel extends across the frame. The scale is ambiguous and vast: the intimate texture of the spacecraft contrasts with the planetary curve beyond.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the bright arc of the horizon, then look down to recognize the station that makes this viewpoint possible. Next, notice the halo and spots of light in the center: they are not in space, but on the window glass. That reflection changes the image from a landscape into a portrait of looking itself.

ContextContexto

According to NASA, this photograph, identified as iss073e0299808, was taken on June 13, 2025, from the cupola of the International Space Station, known as its 'window to the world.' The light of an orbital sunrise refracts through one of its windows. At the bottom, part of the U.S. segment can be seen, including the SpaceX Dragon crew spacecraft docked to the forward port of the Harmony module. At the time, the station was flying 259 miles —about 417 kilometers— above the Republic of Kiribati in the Pacific Ocean, at approximately 3:40 a.m. local time. The specific crew member who took it is not named in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

The International Space Station completes one orbit around Earth in about 90 minutes, so its crew can witness around 16 sunrises and 16 sunsets in a single Earth day.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does your reading of the image change when you realize the bright surface above is Earth, and not the sky?¿Cómo cambia tu lectura de la imagen cuando entiendes que la superficie brillante de arriba es la Tierra y no el cielo?
  2. What role do the window's reflections and smudges play: do they obstruct the view, or make it more truthful?¿Qué papel juegan los reflejos y las manchas de la ventana: estorban la vista o la hacen más verdadera?
  3. What does it mean to call a technological module a 'window to the world' when the world is seen from outside it?¿Qué significa llamar “ventana al mundo” a un módulo tecnológico cuando el mundo se mira desde fuera de él?

If you look closely you will see we are not gazing into space directly, but through a marked pane of glass. There are faint scratches, smudges and ghostly reflections, concentric halos and a large translucent circle caused by lens flare. I love how the pure, intense light of the dawn contrasts with the imperfect window. Below, the station is cut out in silhouette, with its metal cylinders and that wrinkled silvery insulation. It reminds us that every image of the cosmos is also physical and fragile.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What intrigues me most is that the photo is upside down from what we expect. Earth seems to float above and the blackness of space lies below, because it was taken from the cupola, the window to the world on the International Space Station. The luminous arc is the horizon 417 kilometers over Kiribati in the Pacific, at 3:40 in the morning. The Sun is still hidden but its glow creates white orbs and flares across the glass. Below you can make out the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft docked and two solar panels on the sides.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like Earth is hanging from the ceiling like a giant blue and green rug with little clouds. The white stripe below is the sunrise and it shines so bright it makes light bubbles everywhere, like when you take a picture of the Sun and get little dots. I see the station like a little metal house covered in wrinkly foil with two wings, one reddish on the left and one dark on the right. Everything looks upside down, as if we were doing somersaults in space and the planet were looking down at us from above.
