What you would seeLo que verías

A top-down orbital view of a large river system fanning out across an arid landscape. From the center-right, a broad, dark channel in deep blue-green tones flows in and then branches progressively toward the left into an intricate network of meandering channels, floodplains and braided waterways. The pattern resembles an outstretched hand or the veins of a leaf, with thin filaments fading at the margins. Surrounding the delta, the desert terrain appears in pale beige, dusty rose-ochre and light brown, with a grainy, mottled texture and faint parallel striations that suggest dunes or vast agricultural lines seen at extreme scale. There is no horizon or cloud cover; the frame is filled entirely by the Earth's surface. The contrast between the dark water and the powdery land is sharp yet nuanced: in the finest distributaries the blue lightens and mingles with sediment and vegetation hues. The light is flat and diffuse, typical of daytime orbital photography, with no strong shadows. The scale is immense, spanning tens of kilometers in a single view, while the delicate tracery of the smallest channels rewards close, slow looking.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the main river from the right as it opens into a fan, then trace the finer branches toward the edges. Notice the color shift from the saturated central channel to the paler outer waterways. Observe the desert texture around it and how water draws the boundary between fertile and arid land.

ContextContexto

Photograph taken on August 30, 2025 from the International Space Station, about 261 miles above Africa, according to NASA JSC data. It shows the Okavango Delta in Botswana, part of the Moremi Game Reserve. As the source notes, it is formed by the Okavango River flowing from Angola and, instead of reaching the sea, spilling into the Kalahari Desert to create a seasonally flooded wetland. It is one of the world's largest inland deltas and supports one of Africa's most biodiverse ecosystems. The image is part of the NASA Image and Video Library and exemplifies orbital Earth observation used to document hydrological processes and landscapes.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Okavango is one of the few major inland deltas on Earth that never reaches an ocean or lake, instead evaporating and infiltrating into the Kalahari, so its size changes dramatically with seasonal flooding.

The conservatorLa restauradora

What draws me in is the contrast between the stable and the fragile. The pale beige and rosy ochre of the Kalahari look like old paper, dry and slightly grainy, and on top the deep bluish green water spreads like ink soaking in. I worry about preserving that reading: the thinnest filaments where blue lightens with sediment are extremely delicate and could be lost with poor printing. We must respect the flat orbital light, without inventing shadows, so both the colossal scale and the fine detail remain legible.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Seeing this from 420 kilometers up gives me goosebumps. This is the August 30, 2025 photo from the International Space Station and there is no horizon or clouds, just surface. There is Botswana and the Okavango River coming from Angola and instead of reaching the sea it fans out over the desert. I love explaining that the open hand shape is channels and floodplains that change with the seasons. It is pure science from orbit, documenting water on arid land across dozens of kilometers in a single frame.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant hand painted on the ground or the little veins of a huge leaf. The thick river comes in on one side really dark and then splits into many little blue paths that get lighter until they disappear into the beige. I imagine I am an astronaut looking out the window and watching water play hide and seek in the desert. I want to trace the channels with my finger and count how many split off. It is like when you overwater a plant pot and the water makes doodles in the soil.
