What you would seeLo que verías
The scene takes place underwater at the bottom of a large test pool with dark gray concrete walls and a light, sandy floor scattered with small dark rocks. At the center, an astronaut stands holding with both hands a metal pole flying the flag of the United States; the fabric shows its red and white stripes and blue canton with white stars, rippling gently in the water current. He wears a bulky white spacesuit with a transparent helmet and circular visor, thick gloves, a backpack unit, and black and gold accents at the joints and boots. To his left, a diver in dark gear with a vest, oxygen tank on the back and blue fins swims slightly leaning toward the astronaut, arm extended. To the right, another diver kneels on the sand, wearing diving goggles, a light long-sleeve shirt, black shorts and breathing apparatus, raising one arm toward the flag. Bubbles rise toward the surface, large boulders sit in the background, and diffused light filters through the water creating soft shadows and a hazy, bluish atmosphere.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the central astronaut and the flag as the visual anchor. Then look to the two support divers and the rising bubbles that reveal this is an underwater setting, not the Moon. Finally notice the contrast between the rocky backdrop imitating the lunar surface and the pool walls that betray the rehearsal on Earth.
ContextContexto
According to data from the NASA Image and Video Library, the photograph was taken on May 29, 2025, at the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory at Johnson Space Center (JSC). It shows Axiom Space astronaut and Chief Technology Officer Koichi Wakata during the first crewed underwater test of the lunar spacesuit developed by Axiom Space. Such underwater tests simulate weightlessness and help evaluate mobility, balance and procedures for future lunar missions under the Artemis program. Image credit is given to NASA/JSC. No further details about the suit development are provided in the original description.

Curious detailDato curioso
NASA's Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory holds one of the world's largest indoor pools, with over 6 million gallons of water, used since the 1990s to train astronauts.

If you look closely, you will see how water transforms materials. The almost luminous white of the lunar suit contrasts with the dark gray of the concrete and the light sandy tone of the bottom with small rocks. The deployed flag shows its red and white stripes and the blue rectangle with stars, rippling gently in the current. The black and gold details on the joints and boots stand out under that diffuse bluish light that creates soft shadows and a hazy atmosphere.

What you see underwater is not the Moon, even if it looks like it. It is the test pool at Johnson Space Center, where on May 29, 2025, Axiom Space astronaut Koichi Wakata tested the Axiom Space lunar suit. Underwater tests simulate weightlessness to evaluate mobility and balance. He holds a pole with the United States flag, between two divers assisting him. The bubbles rising to the surface and the rocks on the bottom complete this rehearsal scene for the Artemis program.

It looks like the astronaut is planting a flag at the bottom of the sea! He is all in white with his round transparent helmet and big boots, holding tight to the flagpole that moves with the water. On one side a diver with blue fins swims and on the other another diver kneels on the sand raising a hand. There are bubbles going up like little balloons and giant rocks behind. It is like they are playing astronauts in a huge blue pool.
