What you would seeLo que verías
The scene takes place inside a vast, very bright industrial hall with a pale floor and white walls. At the center, slightly to the right, a large piece of equipment covered in matte white fabric hangs in midair. Its shape is irregular and boxy, with soft folds, seams, and bulges that hide the machinery underneath; only small metal parts, connectors, and an orange label show at its lower edge. It is held by thin cables rising out of the top of the frame and steadied by workers holding guide ropes. Below it sits a black platform with yellow markings and four short posts, apparently waiting to receive or release it. Around it, five people wear light-blue cleanroom coveralls, blue gloves, caps or white hard hats, and face coverings. One photographs the operation at lower left, another pulls a rope in the foreground, and a third touches a lifting fixture. In the background on the left is another larger white-covered structure on a platform with Japanese characters, plus an orange cone and scattered tools. To the right are metal stairs, railings, shelving, and more machinery. The light is even and clinical, with few shadows, and the palette is dominated by white, pale blue, and gray, broken by small touches of yellow, orange, and black.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the large white volume hanging in the center and follow its cables up out of frame. Then notice the hands and guide ropes that keep it steady. A small detail changes the reading: the Japanese lettering on the platform at left connects this clean, quiet maneuver to an international station assembled piece by piece.

According to NASA, this photograph was taken on January 9, 2009, in the Space Station Processing Facility at Kennedy Space Center, Florida. It shows workers examining the ICS Exposed Facility, or ICS-EF, after it was lifted from its stand. It was to be installed on the Experiment Logistics Module-Exposed Section of the Japanese Experiment Module. The system included an antenna, a pointing mechanism, frequency converters, a high-power amplifier, and Earth, Sun, and inertial sensors. It formed part of space shuttle Endeavour's payload for mission STS-127, then targeted for launch on May 15. Photo credit: NASA/Jim Grossmann.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual fact: although the equipment appears massive, its movement depends on nearly invisible cables and on people guiding it by hand with thin ropes, without ever pushing the hardware directly.

What fascinates me is that matte white cover over the equipment. It is not decorative, it is pure protection. I see its soft folds, its seams and how it hides the bulky machinery, leaving only a few metal connectors and an orange tag visible along the lower edge. It reminds me of how we pack a fragile sculpture before moving it. The blue gloves, the pale coveralls and even the flat clinical light with almost no shadows speak of extreme care to keep this piece free of contamination before it goes to space.

For me this image is the behind the scenes of space exploration. That white bundle hanging from cables is the ICS Exposed Facility, the communications system for the Japanese Experiment Module. Here it is being lifted in the Space Station Processing Facility on January 9, 2009 for checks before flying aboard Endeavour on mission STS-127. It carried an antenna, a high power amplifier and Earth and Sun sensors. Seeing it handled by hand, steadied with guide ropes, reminds me that every part of the Space Station was once held by very patient human hands.

It looks like a giant present wrapped in a white sheet and floating in the air like a ghost. I like that five people dressed in light blue take care of it with blue gloves and little white hats, like spaceship doctors. One takes photos, another pulls a little rope and another touches it very carefully. Below there is a black base with yellow stripes that looks like its little bed. Everything looks super clean and bright, as if they do not want to leave a single fingerprint before sending it to space.
