Vertical photograph taken from a distance on a clear, bright day. In the foreground, below, stretches a corridor of wild vegetation: uneven green grass, dense dark-leafed bushes on the left and right, and small shrubs that frame the scene like a natural passageway. The vegetation is in soft shadow and slightly out of focus in the lower corners. In the center, far away, a slender white rocket with a pointed nose cone is beginning to rise beside a thin launch tower. Around it billows an enormous cloud of white and gray smoke, puffy, with rounded curls that expand upward and to the left, hiding part of the vehicle. At the base burns an intense yellow, orange, and white glow, almost like a small luminous explosion, from which paler vapor also rises and spreads horizontally. On the right, imposing and closer to the camera, stands a tall metal structure of scaffolding, platforms, and antennas in bluish-gray tones. Other smaller towers and poles can be made out on the horizon. Above, more than half the image is pale, grayish, cloudless sky, which makes the smoke and fire stand out by contrast and by scale.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the grassy corridor in the foreground to the glow at the center; the landscape works like a funnel toward the launch. Then compare the stillness of the vegetation with the expanding smoke, and notice how the tower on the right gives scale to the rocket, which is farther away than it first seems. The detail that changes the reading is that the vehicle is barely emerging: most of its presence is fire, smoke, and light.

ContextContexto

According to the source, the image was taken on September 10, 2011, at 9:08 a.m. EDT at Space Launch Complex 17B on Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, United States. It shows the liftoff of a United Launch Alliance Delta II Heavy rocket carrying NASA's GRAIL mission, made up of two twin spacecraft intended to orbit the Moon in tandem. Its goal was to precisely measure variations in the lunar gravitational field in order to better understand the density of the crust and mantle, the Moon's internal structure, and its thermal and impact history. GRAIL's two spacecraft were later named Ebb and Flow through a naming contest for school students in the United States.

The conservatorLa restauradora

From my work as a restorer I see this 2011 photograph as both fragile and powerful. The Delta II Heavy lifts off from Cape Canaveral amid white smoke and an orange flame against a pale sky. I notice how the foreground vegetation, with green grass and shrubs, frames the launch like a natural corridor. The image preserves the bright daylight and the vapor, reminding us that every mission leaves traces on both metal and landscape.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What excites me is knowing that this Delta II Heavy carries NASA's GRAIL mission, two twin spacecraft flying in tandem to the Moon. It launched on September 10, 2011 from Complex 17B to measure variations in the lunar gravity field. With that data we better understood the crust, the mantle and the history of impacts. Seeing the fire and smoke is seeing the start of a journey to weigh the Moon from orbit.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Wow, the rocket looks like a giant white pencil spitting fire! Below there is a huge cloud of smoke that covers almost everything and glows with yellow and orange light. I like that in front there is green grass and bushes as if we were hiding and watching from the field. The sky looks very clear and big. I imagine the super loud noise and that the two sister spacecraft are going together to circle the Moon.
