What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of the image, a Delta II Heavy rocket climbs vertically against a pale, almost whitish sky washed out by bright daylight. The vehicle is slender, with a white nose fairing and lower section and a dark blue band around its midsection where small logos are visible. Near its base, nine strap-on solid boosters surround the core, their metallic nozzles faintly discernible. Below, an enormous burst of white and golden fire erupts at liftoff, wrapped in dense, billowing clouds of light gray and warm beige smoke that unfold in turbulent, cotton-like swirls, glowing with intense heat. The luminous plume dominates the lower half of the frame and contrasts sharply with the crisp silhouette of the rocket. In the lower right foreground, a dark metallic launch tower appears, a lattice of scaffolding, girders and a thin antenna that provides human scale. The composition is vertical and symmetrical, with the rocket placed slightly above center, conveying power, upward momentum and a fleeting moment of suspension in the air.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the fireball and smoke at the base, then follow the rocket’s vertical line up to its tip. Notice the contrast between the incandescent white of ignition and the washed-out sky. Pause on the small tower at right: its scale reveals how monumental the launch is.

ContextContexto

According to source data, the photograph shows the United Launch Alliance Delta II Heavy rocket lifting off at 9:08 a.m. EDT on September 10, 2011, from Space Launch Complex 17B at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida. It carried NASA’s twin Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission to the Moon. Two spacecraft flying in tandem were to precisely map variations in the lunar gravitational field to reveal differences in crust and mantle density and help answer questions about the Moon’s internal structure, thermal evolution and impact history. The image is from the NASA Image and Video Library, photo credit NASA/Kim Shiflett.

Curious detailDato curioso

The GRAIL mission consisted of twin spacecraft named Ebb and Flow, which flew in formation around the Moon measuring the distance between them to within microns to map its gravity field.

I pause on what was fleeting and became eternal here: that column of white and golden fire and the light gray smoke in cotton-like swirls. I notice how the intense daylight whitens the sky and reveals contrasting textures, from the smooth metal of the Delta II Heavy rocket with its dark blue band to the turbulent vapor. I wonder how to preserve the vibration of the instant, the glow of heat and the sharpness of the ascending silhouette without losing the density of the plume.

This is September 10, 2011 at 9:08 a.m. from Cape Canaveral, the Delta II Heavy lifting off from Complex 17B with NASA's GRAIL mission. It carried twin probes to measure the lunar gravity field with unprecedented precision. It thrills me to think that this vertical ascent, with its nine strap-on boosters firing, was the first step to map the crust and mantle of the Moon and understand its thermal evolution from the inside.

Wow, it looks like a giant flying pencil! It is white with a little blue stripe and at the bottom it has super bright fire like an angry dragon. The smoke makes fluffy gray and beige clouds that open up like burnt cotton candy. The rocket goes straight up into the pale sky and looks tiny next to all that smoke. On the side you can see a tower with little metal beams, as if it were waving goodbye.
