What you would seeLo que verías
In the center of the image hangs a large, nearly square, light gray metal panel, taller than the torsos of the people around it. It is suspended from above by two dark straps with metal hooks, only partly visible at the top edge. Its surface combines smooth areas with screws, small black holes, rectangular recesses, and three openings covered by dark cross-shaped grids; toward the lower right there are smaller boxes and cylindrical fittings. In the foreground, at the bottom, lies a bulky object wrapped in translucent brown plastic, probably part of the shipping container. Around the panel stand several technicians in pale blue cleanroom gowns, disposable teal hair covers, and blue or white gloves. The person on the left raises one white-gloved hand to steady the upper corner; another, on the right, holds its side. Behind it, other figures are partly hidden. On the right in the background, a man in a royal blue polo shirt and glasses watches with his hands behind him, beside another technician. The setting is a bright, white-walled indoor facility with a light floor, diffuse even lighting, little shadow, gray equipment, and a small orange object blurred on the left. The overall texture is industrial and clean: matte metal, soft fabric, and crinkled plastic.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the hands touching the panel and follow the straps upward to sense its weight. Then look for the grid-like openings and small rectangular recesses: they turn a seemingly solid plate into a carrier for many experiments. Finally, compare the people in cleanroom clothing with the observer in a blue polo shirt in the background.
ContextContexto
According to NASA, this photograph by NASA/Leif Heimbold, dated October 2, 2017, shows the arrival of the Materials International Space Station Experiment-Flight Facility, or MISSE-FF, at the low bay of the Space Station Processing Facility at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Technicians are using a crane to lift the hardware out of its shipping container. MISSE was designed to test materials and computing elements on the exterior of the International Space Station, exposed to vacuum, atomic oxygen, ultraviolet radiation, direct sunlight, and extreme heat and cold. The goal was to better understand the durability of coatings, electronic sensors, and other components for future spacecraft. At the time of the photograph, it was to be delivered on a future commercial resupply mission; the exact mission is not stated in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso
In low-Earth orbit, atomic oxygen can erode many materials; that is why a platform like MISSE exposes samples outside the station instead of testing them only inside a laboratory on Earth.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I first look at the surface of the light gray metal panel hanging in the center: I see smooth areas, screws, black holes and three dark cross-shaped grids that will need to be studied without touching. I notice how the team handles it with dark straps and white and blue gloves to avoid leaving oil or dust, as any particle would affect future tests. The container with translucent brown plastic below suggests a highly controlled and clean transfer, typical of a bright white clean room.

For me this almost square panel, taller than the technicians torsos, is exciting because it is the MISSE-FF photographed on October 2, 2017 at Kennedy Space Center. From the record I know it would fly to test materials and computing outside the International Space Station, exposed to vacuum, atomic oxygen, ultraviolet radiation and extreme hot and cold swings. Seeing it suspended by the crane with its little boxes and cylinders makes me picture it up there later, under direct sunlight, gathering data for future spacecraft.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
Wow, it looks like a giant square robot hanging from two straps like a swing! It has little black dots, screws and three little windows with dark crosses that look like faces. Below there is a bundle wrapped in wrinkly brown plastic like a big bag. Around it there are people in light blue coats, bluish green caps and blue and white gloves holding it very carefully so it does not fall. The room is all white and shiny, like a laboratory from a space movie.
