What you would seeLo que verías
In a spacious, bright industrial hall with a polished light-gray floor and high ceilings lined with pipes and fluorescent lights, a group of seven technicians in cleanroom attire watches a crane operation. They wear light-blue long-sleeved gowns, white face masks, green disposable hair covers and blue nitrile gloves; some have brown disposable shoe covers. At the center of the image, a rectangular metallic platform with silver components is suspended by a white metal frame connected to an overhead crane, lifted above an open shipping container partially wrapped in translucent bubble plastic with brown tape. In the right foreground, a wheeled base painted white with an ochre top plate featuring two square cutouts stands sharply in focus; a technician leans over it to inspect it closely. In the background, orange and yellow forklifts, yellow-and-black barriers, shelving and additional out-of-focus personnel are visible. The light is even and cool, typical of a laboratory environment, casting soft reflections on the floor and on metallic surfaces and emphasizing textures of fabric, crinkled plastic and steel.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the vertical line of the crane down to the suspended payload, then scan the circle of technicians to sense the choreography of the lift. Pause on the technician leaning over the ochre platform in the foreground; his posture captures the precision of cleanroom work.
ContextContexto
The image records the arrival of the Materials International Space Station Experiment-Flight Facility (MISSE-FF) hardware at the low bay of the Space Station Processing Facility at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on October 2, 2017, photographed by Leif Heimbold for NASA. Technicians assisted as the hardware was lifted by crane from its shipping container. MISSE-FF is designed to test materials and computing elements on the exterior of the International Space Station, exposed to vacuum, atomic oxygen, ultraviolet radiation, direct sunlight and extreme temperatures, to better understand durability for future spacecraft. It was slated for delivery to the station on a later commercial resupply mission. The source does not specify the manufacturers of the individual components seen.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I first notice materials and their vulnerability. I see light blue gowns, blue gloves and green caps protecting not an old painting but a metal platform that will travel to space. I am struck by how the translucent bubble plastic and brown tapes wrap the shipping container, just like we pack a sculpture. The cool lab light shows reflections on the polished floor and on the steel, and reveals dust that must not be there. Everything is preventive care.

For me this photo is the moment before space. It is October 2, 2017 at Kennedy Space Center and what hangs from the crane is MISSE-FF, a lab to test materials outside the International Space Station. It excites me to think that this silvery platform will soon feel vacuum, atomic oxygen, ultraviolet radiation and extreme cold. For now it is in very earthly human hands, surrounded by orange forklifts and light blue gowns. It is science getting ready to leave the planet.

It looks like they are playing at making the metal thing fly. Seven people in light blue suits and green little hats watch very seriously as the big machine lifts it with a crane. Everything is so shiny, the floor looks like a mirror and there are crinkly plastics like the bubble wrap I love to pop. There is a white cart with a cookie-colored board that has two square holes. What are those little holes for? It must be something important if everyone takes such good care of it.
