What you would seeLo que verías

In the foreground, filling almost the entire vertical frame, a circular funeral wreath stands on a simple white three-legged easel, visible at the bottom as a plain triangular structure. The wreath is dense and full: deep red roses and carnations are mixed with white carnations and chrysanthemums, small purple and blue flowers, and dark green foliage tucked between the petals. Near the lower center, one large white chrysanthemum stands out, its long, thin, pointed petals radiating from a yellowish center like a star or sun. Two wide white satin ribbons cross diagonally over the upper part and the middle; in gold capital letters they read “AN AMERICAN HERO” and “ALWAYS REMEMBERED.” At the upper left, a large bow with red, white, and blue stripes crowns the arrangement. The background is out of focus: a wall in blue and violet-gray tones, a barely visible tiled floor, and a dark band along the left edge. The indoor light is soft but directed, casting bluish and purplish reflections over the easel, the floor, and the edges of the flowers, and creating a cool, solemn atmosphere. Contrasting textures are clear throughout: the smooth sheen of satin, the velvety roughness of petals, and the plain rigidity of the stand.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First read the two ribbons from upper left to lower right, then let your eye fall to the large white flower near the bottom center. Notice how that single bloom, like a starburst, quietly connects a funerary wreath to spaceflight. Also look at the cold blue-purple light: it turns a colorful arrangement into something restrained and ceremonial.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this photograph by NASA/Kim Shiflett, credited to NASA/KSC, was taken during a ceremony on April 18, 2019, at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida. A memorial wreath was placed in the Heroes and Legends exhibit after a ceremony honoring the memory of former astronaut Owen Garriott. The source notes that he flew aboard the Skylab space station on the Skylab 3 mission and aboard the space shuttle Columbia on the STS-9/Spacelab-1 mission. He died on April 15 at age 88. These details do not tell us who took part in the ceremony or how long the wreath remained on display.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual observation: the large white chrysanthemum at the lower center, with its long, pointed petals radiating from a pale core, resembles a star or an exploding sun, so even the flowers seem to echo the space theme of the tribute.

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I pause on the ephemeral trying to endure: this funeral wreath speaks through flowers that will soon wilt, placed on a simple triangular white easel. I notice the contrast of textures described in the record: the glossy satin of the ribbons, the velvety red and white petals and the dark green foliage. At the center, that large white chrysanthemum radiating like a sun, surrounded by cool bluish and purplish light, reminds me that preserving memory is also about caring for fragile materials.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this image and think of Owen Garriott, remembered in the record for his flights on Skylab 3 and on Columbia for mission STS-9 with Spacelab-1. The wreath placed on April 18, 2019 at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, in the Heroes and Legends exhibit, shows no rockets or suits, only red, white, purple and blue flowers. Yet that central chrysanthemum that looks like a star makes me think of orbits, of tributes that come down from space to earth with solemnity and patriotism.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This wreath is huge and full of flowers! I see very red roses, white and little purple flowers with green leaves, all packed tightly in a big circle. In the middle there is a white flower with long pointy petals that looks like a sun or a star. It has two white ribbons with something written in gold letters and on top a bow with red, white and blue stripes like a flag. It stands on a little white stand and behind everything looks blue and blurry, like a serious and quiet place.
