What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of the frame a slender white rocket with a black nose fairing climbs vertically above an intensely bright white-orange column of flame. Its body shows soot streaks and black bands, with wisps of white vapor and smoke peeling away as it ascends. At the base the launch pad is barely visible behind a metal railing washed in the intense glow of the engine. On either side of the vehicle rise two tall, dark towers in near silhouette — one on the left leaning inward and one on the right topped with lights and a small camera. The sky is a deep, saturated blue, almost night-like yet still daylight, clear in the middle and edged with low puffy clouds: on the left a grayish cloud lit from the side and on the right a large billowing plume of white exhaust expanding and dissipating. Low sunlight grazes the clouds and smoke, creating strong contrast between the blinding ignition and the cool shadows of the ground structures. You can make out textures of painted metal, scorch marks, and watery vapor, and the sense of upward motion is immediate and powerful.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the brightest flare at the base and follow the rocket body upward to its dark tip. Then contrast the shadowed towers on each side with the expansive vapor cloud on the right; the contrast reveals scale and power. Pause on the soot on the fuselage and the falling flakes of ice — traces of cryogenic fuel and extreme heat caught in one instant.
ContextContexto
The image records the liftoff of a Rocket Lab Electron rocket from Pad B, Launch Complex 1 in Māhia, New Zealand, at 11:46 p.m. EDT on May 25, 2023 (3:46 p.m. NZST on May 26). According to NASA data, it carried the final pair of CubeSats for the TROPICS mission — Time-Resolved Observations of Precipitation structure and storm Intensity with a Constellation of Smallsats. The successful launch completed the constellation, which measures microwave frequencies to gather data on temperature, precipitation, water vapor and clouds to improve understanding of storm formation and intensification. The photograph is from the NASA Image and Video Library, credited to NASA/KSC.
Curious detailDato curioso
The Electron rocket is only about 18 meters tall and built for small payloads; despite its modest size it can deploy an entire constellation of CubeSats like TROPICS in dedicated launches.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- How does the rocket’s vertical thrust feel against the horizontal spread of clouds and horizon?¿Qué te hace sentir la verticalidad del cohete frente a la horizontalidad de las nubes y el horizonte?
- How does knowing that such a small payload can help forecast hurricanes change how you see the launch?¿Cómo cambia tu lectura saber que una carga tan pequeña puede ayudar a prever huracanes?
- What relationship do you see between the visible technology and the invisible forces of vapor, light and gravity?¿Qué relación ves entre la tecnología visible y las fuerzas invisibles del vapor, la luz y la gravedad?

What grips me is the tension between the ephemeral and the permanent. That intense white-orange fire leaves soot on the fuselage's white paint, black marks that are wounds from heat and use. Steam and smoke veil the metal while the deep blue sky contrasts with the blinding glare of the engine. I wonder how to preserve that light without losing the scorched texture or the watery vapor already dissolving into the air.

Seeing Electron lift off from Māhia with the last two TROPICS CubeSats is so exciting to me. That slim white dot with a black fairing carries microwave instruments to measure temperature, water vapor, precipitation and clouds to understand how hurricanes form. Launched from New Zealand at 23:46 EDT on May 25, it completed a small but powerful constellation. For me it proves we no longer need giants to do great space science.

Wow! It looks like a giant pencil spitting fire and flying away super fast. Its belly is stained black as if burned by soot and underneath it has a huge tail of white and orange fire lighting everything up. There are two dark towers like guardians on the sides and the sky is deep blue with fluffy clouds. I feel it go whoooosh and everything shakes, as if I were lifting off with it too.
¡Wow!
