What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of the image, a slender white rocket with a black nose cone lifts off vertically from a launch pad, captured at the exact moment of ignition. A bright orange and white flame erupts from its base, surrounded by thick, billowing clouds of smoke and steam that spread outward and downward, partially obscuring the metal launch structure. Around the rocket are horizontal white tanks, pipes, scaffolding, and two large cylindrical storage vessels on the right, all under crisp daylight. The sky is a deep, clear blue with no clouds, creating a strong contrast with the gray and white plumes. In the background, low dark hills and a tall, thin secondary tower are visible. The rocket bears vertical black lettering along its body, barely legible at this distance. Side sunlight casts sharp shadows across the metal and vapor, and the smoke shows soft, voluminous, cotton-like textures. The composition conveys upward thrust, with the foreground smoke framing the scene and the rocket forming a dominant vertical axis against the open sky.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the column of fire up to the black tip of the rocket, then look down at the cloud of smoke enveloping the pad. Notice how the smoke frames the scene and reveals the industrial scale of the tanks and towers against the open sky and distant hills.
ContextContexto
The image shows a Rocket Lab Electron rocket lifting off from Pad B at Launch Complex 1 in Māhia, New Zealand, at 11:46 p.m. EDT on May 25, 2023 (3:46 p.m. NZST on May 26). According to source data from NASA, it carried the final pair of CubeSats for NASA's TROPICS mission, Time-Resolved Observations of Precipitation structure and storm Intensity with a Constellation of Smallsats. This successful launch completed the constellation, which measures microwave frequencies to collect data on temperature, precipitation, water vapor and clouds to improve understanding of storm formation and intensification. The photograph is from the NASA Image and Video Library, credited to NASA/KSC.

The Electron is a small two-stage, partially reusable launch vehicle designed specifically to place small payloads like CubeSats into orbit, each satellite roughly the size of a shoebox.

From my perspective I linger on the frozen instant: metal, smoke and light coexist without erasing each other. I see the white rocket with its black tip as a vertical axis, the orange flare born at its base and that dense smoke wrapping the tower and tanks. I wonder about the heat, the vibration and how this photograph preserves the spongy texture of the vapor and the shine on the metal so the liftoff keeps happening each time we look at it.

What moves me is what you cannot see yet is about to happen. That Electron lifting off from Māhia on the night of May 25, 2023 carries the final two TROPICS CubeSats. With them a small constellation was completed to measure microwaves and study temperature, rainfall, vapor and clouds inside storms. Looking at this column of fire is imagining data that will help understand how a hurricane is born and grows, all from satellites the size of a shoebox.

It looks like the rocket is blowing a giant cloud! It is white with a little black tip and underneath it has an orange fire tail going whoooosh! All the white and gray smoke spreads like a blanket and hides the tower a little bit. The sky is super blue with no clouds and the hills look tiny behind. I like it because it feels like it is zooming up so fast, as if it were saying bye, see you in space!
