What you would seeLo que verías
A horizontal, daytime photograph of a launch, taken from some distance and slightly from below. In the center-left of the image, a slender, vertical black-and-white rocket, already airborne, climbs above a narrow trail of intensely bright white-blue and yellow fire. Its dark tip points toward the upper edge; the body shows bands and a small, barely legible logo. Sparks and bright droplets scatter around the flame. The lower third is filled by an enormous mass of white, gray, and pale pink smoke and vapor, with rounded, cotton-like edges. On the right, the cloud rises higher and brighter; on the left, it opens into darker swirls. Among the smoke appear very small black silhouettes that set the scale: a tilted launch-platform structure, two thin poles with antennas, and, low at center, a cylindrical metal tank. The background is a clear deep-blue sky, lighter near the horizon. Daylight lights the smoke from above and leaves soft shadows in its folds; the engine glare is the brightest point. No people are visible. The composition opposes the rocket's straight, thin, rising line to the heavy, expansive horizontality of the exhaust clouds.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the rocket's vertical line from its dark tip down to the dazzling engine flame. Then look at the tiny platform structures emerging from the smoke: they reveal the true scale. Finally, notice the sparks around the flame, a brief detail that makes the ascent feel immediate.
ContextContexto
According to the source, the NASA Image and Video Library with credit to NASA/KSC, the image shows a Rocket Lab Electron rocket lifting off from Pad B, Launch Complex 1, in Māhia, New Zealand. It took place at 11:46 p.m. EDT on May 25, 2023, already May 26 in local time. It carried the final pair of NASA TROPICS CubeSats, secured inside the payload fairing at the top. With that successful launch, the constellation was completed. TROPICS gathers data on temperature, precipitation, water vapor, and clouds by measuring microwave frequencies, to better understand how storms form and intensify. Rocket Lab is listed as the author; the individual photographer's name is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
TROPICS does not study storms only with visible light: its small satellites measure microwave frequencies to infer temperature, rain, water vapor, and clouds.

I focus on the contrast between the fleeting and the precise. Below, the huge cloud of smoke and vapor shows white, gray and pale pink swirls that daylight sculpts like cotton, soft yet heavy and horizontal. Above, the very thin vertical line of the black and white Electron rocket cuts through the deep blue sky. The bluish-white and yellow fire is the brightest point and leaves tiny sparks. That tension between the straight trail rising up and the expansive mass left below is what I try to preserve when looking at the image.

What excites me is that this tiny dark dot with a black tip is a Rocket Lab Electron lifting off from Māhia, New Zealand, on the night of May 25, 2023. Inside its upper fairing are the last two CubeSats of NASA's TROPICS mission. With them the constellation was completed to measure microwave frequencies and study temperature, water vapor, clouds and precipitation. Better understanding how hurricanes are born starts with a flash like this, a column of fire against the blue opening the way to space.

It looks like the rocket is tickling the sky! It is white and black and goes straight up like a flying pencil leaving a little tail of super bright yellow and blue fire. Below there is a giant white and gray cloud that looks like puffy cotton candy going whoosh! You can see tiny little platform structures and the blue sky is totally clear. I imagine the loud noise and that the rocket is carrying its little space boxes to spy on storms from above.

Look carefully: how many thin poles with antennas peek out through the smoke on the sides of the pad?
