What you would seeLo que verías

A black-and-white photograph taken inside a large wind tunnel, viewed from slightly below. Occupying the upper half and cutting diagonally across the frame is the pale, matte model of a B-52 bomber, its blunt rounded nose pointing toward the upper right and its long straight wing stretching to the left. Small paired engine nacelles project from the wing, and taut wires and a dark support strut hold the model from the curved concrete ceiling above. Just beneath the right wing, much smaller and brightly lit, hangs the slender model of the X-15: pointed nose, short wings and a cruciform tail, caught at the instant of release. Below both aircraft stretches a wide, sagging safety net of coarse woven mesh, suspended on simple metal A-frame legs; its surface catches soft shadows and slopes gently down toward the right. In the background at right, framed by a rectangular opening lined with rows of round lamps, stands a man in a light suit, bow tie and pocket square, holding a small object and looking intently toward the models. Fluorescent tubes, panelled walls, ceiling vents, scuffed concrete and deep shadow under the net give the room a worn, industrial texture and a strong sense of scale.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the large B-52 model from its rounded nose toward the tail, then drop your gaze to the small X-15 just released beneath the wing. Next look for the wide safety net: it changes the scene from a flight simulation into a careful laboratory rehearsal. Finally, notice the observer at the right, whose scale reveals how large the models and tunnel really are.

ContextContexto

According to the source, credited to NACA and NASA/LRC and dated September 7, 1958, with a caption placing the tests around 1957, a one-twentieth scale model of the North American X-15 separates from a B-52 model in Langley's 300 MPH Low Speed 7x10 Tunnel. The tests studied the release characteristics and falling motion of air-launching the research airplane, which in real operations was carried beneath a B-52's wing. The image was later published in histories of the Langley laboratory. The scientist's name is not given in the source, and the exact date remains uncertain because the catalog date and caption differ.

Curious detailDato curioso

The real X-15 was not a scale curiosity: between 1959 and 1968 it made 199 research flights and reached Mach 6.7, so this quiet drop test rehearsed one of the most extreme piloted aircraft programs ever flown.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does the presence of the safety net tell us about how experimental knowledge was made before a real flight could be risked?; What changes in our reading of the image when we realize the tiny X-15, not the huge bomber, is the real subject of the test?; How does the formally dressed observer shape our sense of science, authority and distance in the 1950s laboratory?¿Qué nos dice la red de seguridad sobre cómo se producía conocimiento experimental antes de arriesgar un vuelo real?; ¿Qué cambia en la lectura de la imagen al notar que el verdadero protagonista no es el enorme bombardero, sino el diminuto X-15?; ¿Cómo influye el observador, vestido formalmente, en nuestra idea de la ciencia, la autoridad y la distancia en un laboratorio de los años cincuenta?

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you look closely at this black and white photo, you see two suspended models: above, the large, light and matte B-52 with its blunt rounded nose and twin engine pods under the wing; below, tiny and brightly lit, the X-15 with its pointed nose and cruciform tail, caught at the exact moment of release. I love the coarse mesh safety net waiting beneath them, the soft shadows on the concrete and the even sheen of the photographic paper. It is a scientific image that is also a careful industrial portrait.

There is no sky here, but there is a flight rehearsal. Inside the 300 MPH wind tunnel at Langley, a 1/20 scale model of the X-15 is dropped from the wing of a B-52. In real operations the X-15 traveled under the wing of a B-52 before firing its engine and climbing very high. This test from 1957 to 1958 studied how it separates and falls, with cables from the curved ceiling and an opening lined with lamps in the background where a man in a suit and bow tie watches carefully.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the tiny little plane just let go of the big giant plane! The one on top is like a whale with super long wings going diagonally, and the one below is skinny with a point like a pencil. They are hanging from strings in a huge concrete room that looks like a cave. Below there is a circus-like net to catch them if they fall. In the back a man in a light suit with a little bow tie is watching them very seriously, like a judge of the jump.

Look closely: which aircraft is the large one crossing at the top and which is the tiny one hanging just below its wing?

    HintPista

One is the bomber with long wings and a blunt nose, the other is slender with a pointed nose and cruciform tail.

  2. #2

Below the models, what mesh object protects the fall and what is it resting on?

    HintPista

It is woven, thick, slightly sagging and catches soft shadows; look for its light texture at the bottom.
