What you would seeLo que verías

In the foreground, an adult man and a small child sit side by side on a low gray structure, both looking up with smiling, tilted-back faces. The man, on the left, has a dark beard, wears a blue cap, a purple-and-white checkered shirt with rolled sleeves, light-blue jeans, and a red-and-white lanyard with an identification badge hanging at his waist. With both hands he holds orange-framed eclipse glasses to his eyes. The child, on the right and slightly higher, wears a teal henley shirt with navy sleeves and three buttons, tan pants, and holds larger patterned eclipse glasses with both hands; his mouth is slightly open in wonder. Bright midday sunlight models their faces, casts soft shadows, and brings out the texture of fabric, skin, and the man's beard. Behind them are concrete steps with a metal handrail, a paved walkway, and a strip of green grass with small stones. In the blurred background, several adults stand and talk in front of a glass building facade that reflects trees; their softened presence emphasizes the sharp, joyful closeness of the pair in front.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at their raised faces and hands: neither of them is looking at the camera. Then notice that the eclipse itself is outside the frame; what the photograph records is the act of watching. The out-of-focus adults in the background widen that gesture into a collective experience.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this photograph by Ryan Hill for NASA was taken on Monday, April 8, 2024, at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. That day, a total solar eclipse crossed a narrow strip of North America from Mexico's Pacific coast to the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada. At Langley only a partial eclipse was seen, while a partial phase was visible across North America and in parts of Central America and Europe. The relationship between the adult and the child is not stated. The special glasses are essential: looking directly at the Sun without proper protection can seriously damage the eyes.

Curious detailDato curioso

The protagonist of the image is never seen: the Sun and the Moon remain outside the frame, and the eclipse exists only in the gazes, smiles, and filters held up toward the sky.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does a photograph gain by showing the observers instead of the eclipse itself?¿Qué gana una fotografía al mostrar a quienes observan en lugar del eclipse mismo?
  2. How does the presence of an adult and a child change the way we understand a scientific event?¿Cómo cambia la presencia de un adulto y un niño nuestra manera de entender un fenómeno científico?
  3. What other collective experiences are remembered more through people's reactions than through the event itself?¿Qué otras experiencias colectivas se recuerdan más por las reacciones de la gente que por el hecho en sí?

If you look closely you will see how the midday light reveals every texture with beautiful sharpness: the fabric of the purple and white checkered shirt, the dark beard of the adult, the shine of the orange frame of his glasses. I am moved by the contrast between the crisp foreground and the blurred background of the glass facade reflecting trees. The photograph preserves very well that moment of shared wonder from April 8, 2024 in Hampton, Virginia, and makes me think about how to care for that luminous joy for the future.

Here we see the essentials of a partial eclipse like that of April 8, 2024 at the NASA Langley Research Center: two pairs of special glasses essential to look at the Sun without damaging your eyes. In Langley there was no totality, but the partial phase was enjoyed across the continent. Notice their postures: both with faces tilted upward, smiling, the child with his mouth slightly open in wonder. That narrow path of totality that crossed from Mexico to Canada reminds us that even seeing it as partial, in community, is an unforgettable experience.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I love this photo because I also made a wow face like the boy! He is sitting a little higher than the man with the blue cap and checkered shirt, and he holds his patterned glasses very tightly with both little hands. The man also covers his eyes with his orange glasses and they both look up at the sky smiling. Behind them there are concrete steps, a railing and green grass where other people chat. You can tell it is very sunny and they are very happy together watching the eclipse.
