What you would seeLo que verías

Against a solid black background, a teaching chart is arranged under the white title "EUROPA — Surface-feature examples". Fifteen panels, edged with thin red lines, form a regular grid of three rows and five columns. Fourteen are square details of the surface and the last one, at bottom right, is different: a small full disc of Europa on black, in cream, ochre and pale brown tones, visibly cracked. Most of the squares are in black and white or greys, with relief that looks rocky even though it is ice: dense networks of straight and curved lines crossing, ridges that cast fine shadows, shattered blocks like broken paving, dark spots clustered together, craters with raised rims and radial patterns like cracks in glass. The lighting comes in from an angle and sharpens every groove, making some areas feel sandpapery and others almost metallic. In the second row there are smoother, darker stretches with sparse dots and faint lines. In the bottom row, second from the right, one panel bursts into false colour — blues, oranges, reds and golds — tracing the same fractures. There are no people, no scale bar and no text inside the panels; the only human scale is the grid itself.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the full moon in the bottom right corner to grasp the overall scale, then move across the square details as if zooming into its skin. Notice how almost all the panels are grey and only two use colour, and ask what each colour is helping to make visible.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this compilation is titled "Various Landscapes and Features on Europa", credited to NASA/JPL/DLR and dated 26 March 1998, from the NASA Image and Video Library. It gathers examples of surface features on Europa, one of Jupiter's moons. Europa is known for its predominantly icy crust, crisscrossed by cracks and ridges, and it is thought likely to hide a liquid ocean beneath that ice. The individual panels are not labelled here, so the specific name and location of each formation are not known from this sheet alone; probably they come from observations by a space probe.

Curious detailDato curioso

Fourteen panels show fragments of terrain with no horizon; only the small circle in the lower right lets us see Europa whole, like a reminder of the scale that each square is magnifying.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does this surface remind you of on Earth, and where does that comparison stop being useful?¿A qué paisajes de la Tierra te recuerda esta superficie, y en qué punto esa comparación deja de servir?
  2. Why present a moon as a catalogue of fragments instead of a single complete portrait?¿Por qué mostrar una luna como un catálogo de fragmentos y no como un solo retrato completo?
  3. If there were a liquid ocean under this ice, how would the way you look at these cracks change?

What catches my eye is the grid: fifteen panels with thin red borders on a solid black background, like a sample box. Fourteen are fragments in gray and black-and-white, with low-angle light that lifts every ridge and shadow. You can feel the contrast between rough areas packed with crossing grooves and smoother, darker zones in the second row. The last panel at the bottom right is different, the full disk of Europa in pale cream and ochre. And the one before it breaks the tone with false color in blues, oranges and golds tracing the same fractures.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This 1998 sheet from NASA/JPL/DLR gathers fifteen ways to look at Europa, Jupiter’s icy moon. There are no labels or scale bars, just surface. What looks like rock is fractured ice: networks of straight and curved lines, ridges with thin shadows, blocks broken like pavement, craters with raised rims and radial cracks like struck glass. Most is in grays, but the disk in cream and pale brown reminds us this is an entire world. The false-color panel is not decoration, it highlights differences that would otherwise go unnoticed to the naked eye.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant ice puzzle. There are fifteen little squares with red frames on black, and almost all are in black and white like photos of the moon. Some have crossing lines like when you scribble a lot on paper, others have dark little dots and others look like broken ice. My favorite is the last one in the corner, because you can see the whole little ball of Europa in creamy color with light brown scratches. And there is a super colorful one with blue and orange that looks like candy. There are no people, just ice everywhere.
