A horizontal rectangular graphic on a deep black background containing a projected surface map of a celestial body. The map fills the central area as a wide strip in shades of grey, spanning 0° to 360° East Longitude along the bottom axis and -90° to +90° Latitude along the left axis. The image is blurry and pixelated, with irregular diffuse patches suggesting variations in brightness or albedo. Light and medium greys dominate the upper half, with a darker mottled band toward the south pole, especially between 180° and 300° longitude. Near the centre, around 180° longitude and -10° to -30° latitude, a very bright almost white spot with a vague oval shape stands out. The top and bottom edges of the map show more luminous and uniform areas with soft gradients. The scale is abstract, without crisp relief. Below the plot, a black inset with white lettering reads «Surface Map of Pluto / Hubble Space Telescope · Faint Object Camera» and in smaller type «PRC96-09b - ST ScI OPO - March 7, 1996 - A. Stern (SwRI), M. Buie (Lowell Obs.), NASA, ESA». On the left, a vertical bar fading from white to black marks the latitude scale. Lighting is flat and scientific, with no shadows, and the texture is grainy from digital processing.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First scan the map left to right as if it were an unfolded world and locate the equator at 0° latitude. Then pause on the large bright patch near 180° east longitude and notice how contrasts shift from sharper to more diffuse, a sign of Hubble's resolution limits at that time.

ContextContexto

According to source data, this is a surface map of Pluto assembled by computer image processing from four separate images of Pluto's disk taken with the European Space Agency Faint Object Camera aboard NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. It is dated March 28, 1998 and credited to Alan Stern of Southwest Research Institute, Marc Buie of Lowell Observatory, NASA and ESA, held by JPL. It is a scientific product created well before the 2015 New Horizons flyby, when Pluto had not yet been seen up close and only brightness variations were known. No further cultural or material details are given beyond its technique as photography / scientific imagery.

Curious detailDato curioso

This 1996-1998 map was the most detailed view of Pluto available until NASA's New Horizons spacecraft flew by in July 2015 and revealed for the first time the sharp icy heart known as Tombaugh Regio.

I focus on how this image is made, not just what it shows. It is a gray strip centered on deep black, very pixelated and grainy from digital processing. There is no sharp relief, only brightness patches ranging from white to medium gray to black. I notice the vertical gradient bar and the lower caption box in white letters. It is clear this is not a single snapshot but a mosaic assembled from four Hubble exposures, made before we ever saw Pluto up close.

This map moves me because it shows Pluto when it was still a blurry mystery. We see longitudes from 0° to 360° and latitudes from -90° to +90°, all in grayscale indicating albedo variations. The upper half is lighter and toward the south, between 180° and 300° longitude, it gets darker. Near 180° longitude and -10° to -30° latitude a nearly white oval patch shines. This is the 1996 portrait with the Faint Object Camera, years before the New Horizons flyby in 2015.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a long gray cloud in the middle of dark space. Everything is blurry as if you painted it with your fingers and smudged it. The top is lighter and the bottom has a dark stripe with little dots. In the middle there is a super white patch that shines a lot, like a light turned on. At the bottom there are tiny white letters saying it is Pluto and that the Hubble telescope took it. I like to imagine it is a hidden planet we could barely see.
