What you would seeLo que verías

The image displays two curved, horizontal bands of intense blue light set against a deep black void representing Jupiter's north pole. In the foreground, the lower band is broader and more vivid, dominated by a brilliant, whitish arc that stretches edge to edge like an uneven luminous curtain, its lower edge feathering into darker, speckled blues with a soft, diffuse glow. The upper band is narrower and more subdued, separated by a thick horizontal strip of pure black, showing fainter, cloud-like filaments and isolated bright spots near its right and left ends. A thin white graticule overlays the scene: two curved latitudinal lines labeled 50 and 60 and two near-vertical longitudinal lines that intersect the auroral bands, evoking a polar map projection. The light has a phosphorescent, gaseous quality with a finely grainy texture and no hard shadows. There is no horizon or human scale. Tiny white specks dot the blue areas, suggesting sensor noise or faint stars, and the ends of the bands are sharply cropped, as if assembled from projected mapping swaths.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the bright white arc in the lower band from one side to the other, noticing its uneven thickness. Then compare its brilliance to the fainter, more fragmented upper band. Observe how the stark white grid brings geometric order to the soft, turbulent glow.

ContextContexto

This is a scientific image titled Jupiter Northern Auroral Oval, credited to NASA/JPL and dated December 18, 1997, from the NASA Image and Video Library. It depicts the northern auroral oval of Jupiter, a ring of ultraviolet emission encircling the planet's north magnetic pole. Jupiter's auroras are far larger and more powerful than Earth's, and this view was likely obtained with instruments on the Galileo spacecraft or the Hubble Space Telescope, both operating at that time. The overlaid grid shows magnetic latitude to map the structure. The vivid blue is a false color assigned to ultraviolet light invisible to the human eye. No further specific details about this observation are provided in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso

Jupiter's auroras are chiefly powered by charged particles from its volcanic moon Io, not just by the solar wind as on Earth, and can release thousands of times more power than the strongest terrestrial auroras.

What fascinates me is that this intense blue is not real to our eyes, it is a translation of invisible ultraviolet into something we can see and study. Notice how the lower band keeps a very sharp and dense whitish arc, while the upper band is fainter and more speckled. The white grid with the numbers 50 and 60 is not part of the sky, it is a tool added to measure and map the pole without damaging the original image.

We are seeing Jupiter's north pole on December 18, 1997, courtesy of NASA/JPL, and what shines is its northern auroral oval. It is far more energetic and larger than the auroras we see on Earth, created by its gigantic magnetosphere. That black background is space and the blue is false color to show ultraviolet light. I love the two curved bands separated by darkness and the coordinate grid that helps us imagine where each bright spot is located.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks as if Jupiter painted its nails with bright blue light floating like a magic curtain. There is a band at the bottom that shines a lot with white in the middle and another smaller one at the top with separated little lights. Everything is on a black background like nighttime without stars and it has little white lines with numbers as if someone put a tic-tac-toe net on it to play. I like it because it looks soft and sprinkled with stardust.
