What you would seeLo que verías
Four crescent-shaped cutouts of Jupiter are arranged in a diagonal cascade from the upper left to the lower right against a pure black background, like repeating waning moons that form a time sequence. Each cutout shows the planet's curvature with its atmospheric bands in creamy off-white, warm peach-orange and pale bluish gray, crossed by soft streaks and small whitish swirls. In the southern hemisphere of each view two very dark blemishes stand out, in reddish brown to near black, with irregular edges and a faint grayish halo: the impact scars. The upper scar is slightly smaller and more elongated; the lower one is broader and denser. Moving toward the bottom image, the scars become sharper, with a dark central core and subtle concentric rings. Sunlight comes from the left, creating a gentle gradient and a limb darkening at the planetary edge. The scientific imagery shows fine grain typical of nineteen-nineties space photography and conveys an immense scale, with no human presence, only the turbulent, gaseous texture of the Jovian atmosphere.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the top image and follow the diagonal downward to read the passage of time. Pause on the dark cores of the scars and then look at the light halos surrounding them, where you can see how the impacted material dispersed.
ContextContexto
The image titled «Jupiter G Impact Evolution» comes from the NASA Image and Video Library, credited to NASA/JPL and authored by JPL/NASA/STScI, dated May 2, 1998. It shows the evolution of the scar left by fragment G of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, which collided with Jupiter in July 1994. The event was widely observed by ground-based telescopes and by the Hubble Space Telescope, and also by the Galileo spacecraft en route to Jupiter. The four sequential views record how the dark mark produced by the atmospheric explosion expanded and evolved with Jovian winds in the days after the impact.

Curious detailDato curioso
Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 had broken into more than 20 fragments due to Jupiter's tidal forces before impact; fragment G was among the most energetic, leaving scars larger than Earth that remained visible for months.

I focus on the material quality: four cropped views of the same planet aligned diagonally against absolute black. The bands in cream, orangey beige and pale bluish gray show streaks and whitish swirls, with a photographic grain typical of the nineties that reveals its scientific nature. What strikes me most are the two reddish brown, almost black spots in the southern hemisphere, with a grayish halo. From top to bottom the core becomes darker and sharper, with faint concentric rings, as if the atmosphere itself recorded and held the wound.

Here we see history in real time. These are four snapshots of Jupiter after the impact of fragment G from comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 in July 1994, later captured by the Hubble Space Telescope and released by NASA/JPL in 1998. Light comes from the left and reveals the curvature of the gas giant. The two dark scars in the south are dust and aerosols lifted by the explosion. In sequence you can see how Jovian winds expand and sculpt the mark, making it more contrasted and extensive over the days.

They look like four little pieces of Jupiter floating like shiny fingernail clippings in the dark. It has creamy and orange stripes, like a giant marbled marble with white swirls. Down below it has two very dark bruises, almost black with a gray edge. The upper one is small and stretched and the lower one is bigger and stronger. Each photo further down shows the bruises more marked, as if the planet had scraped itself and the bruise was becoming more noticeable.
