What you would seeLo que verías

A scientific mosaic of eight equal square panels in two rows of four against a black background. Each panel shows the nucleus of Comet Hale-Bopp as a luminous spot in orange, yellow and incandescent white at the center, surrounded by a diffuse reddish and grainy coma. The sequence runs chronologically left to right, top to bottom, from September 26, 1995 to October 17, 1996. In the first image the nucleus appears double and elongated with intense brightness and a curved tail upward; in later frames the nucleus becomes point-like and more compact, while the coma shifts in shape and density, sometimes with faint fan-like jets opening to one side. On the left edge a vertical grayscale and primary-color calibration bar is visible. At the bottom a black block with white text reads Comet Hale-Bopp • C/1995 O1 and Hubble Space Telescope • Wide Field Planetary Camera 2, plus small credit text. The texture is grainy, typical of digital astronomical photography, with light appearing to emanate from the object itself against the darkness of space. There is no human scale, only void.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Follow the eight panels in chronological order and compare the central brightness with the surrounding halo. Pause on the first frame and then on the later ones to see how the double nucleus becomes point-like and how dust fans change orientation. Notice the color bar and the contrast between the blown-out white center and the dark red dust to sense intensity.

ContextContexto

This work compiles eight images taken with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 of the Hubble Space Telescope between September 1995 and October 1996, as labeled and according to NASA/JPL/STScI source data. They document the evolution of comet C/1995 O1 Hale-Bopp as it was still approaching the Sun, before its peak brilliance in 1997. Discovered in 1995, Hale-Bopp was one of the brightest and most observed comets of the 20th century and allowed study of its nucleus activity at great distance. The series shows changes in brightness and coma morphology. The lower credit mentions PRC97-08, ST ScI OPO, March 27, 1997 and H. Weaver. No further capture details are given in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

Hubble was able to observe Hale-Bopp while it was still very far from the Sun, revealing an unusually active and large nucleus, which foreshadowed its months-long naked-eye visibility as the great comet of 1997.

I focus on how this mosaic is built: eight equal squares in two rows of four against a black background. Color is the main element, from the incandescent white of the nucleus to the yellow, orange and red of the grainy coma. I notice the nucleus looks double and elongated in the first image and then becomes point-like and compact. The vertical calibration bar on the left reminds me this is a digital scientific photograph, not an artistic image, made to compare tone and brightness.

What excites me is seeing time pass in images. These are eight photos of comet Hale-Bopp taken by Hubble with its Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 between September 26, 1995 and October 17, 1996. They progress left to right and top to bottom while the comet was still approaching the Sun. I watch how the coma changes, sometimes with fans and faint jets to one side, and how its brightness grows. It is a unique record from before its great show in 1997.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a collection of eight tiny suns glowing in the dark. Each little square has an orange and yellow spot in the center with a reddish cloud around it, like magic dust. The first one looks like two little lights stuck together with a curved tail pointing up and then it becomes a single stronger ball. I like to count them: four on top and four below on a black background, like little windows to space turning on.
