What you would seeLo que verías

The image is vertical and dominated by the absolute black of space, with no visible stars. On the right, occupying almost the entire height, Jupiter appears in a crescent phase: only a curved strip of its right side receives light, while the left half is lost in shadow and blends into the background. The illuminated edge draws a sharp, smooth arc that narrows toward the top and bottom ends, like an enormous waning moon. On the visible surface there is no solid ground: horizontal cloud bands appear in shades of cream, beige, pale ocher, grayish white, and light brown. Some bands are smooth and diffuse; others, toward the lower third, tangle into ovals, swirls, and white filaments that look like foam or veined marble. Near the lower right edge, a pale orange oval stands out, smooth in comparison with the chaos around it. Higher up there are faint small spots in the same tone. The light comes from the right, outside the frame, and gradually weakens toward the terminator, the blurred frontier between day and night. There are no people, text, or references for scale: the sensation is one of silence, distance, and floating.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First, follow the bright arc on the right and notice how it thins toward the top and bottom ends. Then look for the boundary between light and shadow, and observe how the bands fade before disappearing. Finally, stop at the pale orange oval near the bottom: its relative calm makes the surrounding turbulence more striking.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this crescent view of Jupiter was taken by NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft on March 24, 1979; the record attributes it to NASA/JPL, comes from the NASA Image and Video Library, and is dated 1998-09-21. Voyager 1 was launched in 1977 to study the outer Solar System and flew by Jupiter in 1979. From Earth, Jupiter almost always appears nearly fully illuminated, so a phase like this can only be photographed from a spacecraft that has already passed it and is looking back. The exact distance of this shot is not known from the data provided.

Curious detailDato curioso

Jupiter is so large that about eleven Earths would fit across its diameter, although the image contains no element that lets us sense that scale.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Why does seeing Jupiter in a crescent, like the Moon, change our perception of its size and distance?¿Por qué ver a Júpiter en creciente, como a la Luna, cambia nuestra percepción de su tamaño y su distancia?
  2. What can the cloud bands and swirls suggest about a planet with no visible solid surface?¿Qué pueden sugerir las bandas y los remolinos de nubes sobre un planeta sin superficie sólida visible?
  3. How does the absolute black surrounding the planet affect the emotions the image produces?¿Cómo afecta el negro absoluto que rodea al planeta a las emociones que produce la imagen?

The conservatorLa restauradora

What moves me most is how light has preserved this image from 1979. The black is absolute, with no stars, and on the right the arc of Jupiter appears like a thin, fragile sheet. I notice the cream and ochre bands, the swirls in the lower third and that pale orange oval near the edge. The terminator, where light fades away, is so delicate and reminds me that preserving a scientific photograph is also about caring for an emotion: the moment when Voyager 1 looked back.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I love this phase because we never see it like this from Earth. Jupiter always shows us its fully lit face, but here Voyager 1 had already passed it on March 24, 1979 and gives us a huge crescent. Only the right edge shines, tapering to points, while the left side merges into shadow. I linger on the cloud bands, the white filaments and the pale oval at the bottom. It is proof that to see things differently you have to change your viewpoint.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant fingernail glowing in the dark. Space is black and Jupiter is a bright curve floating all alone. I imagine it is made of cream and light brown with stripes that swirl like foam. Near the bottom there is a pale orange little eye and above it more specks of the same color. The light comes from a sun we cannot see and makes one side shine while the other disappears. It feels silent and makes me want to wave at the probe that took the picture.
