What you would seeLo que verías
This black-and-white image presents an extreme close-up, top-down view of a fractured icy terrain. The entire frame is filled with a rough, textured ground ranging from light gray to medium gray, resembling dried plaster, salt flats, or porous frozen foam. From the lower right corner diagonally toward the center, two deep, nearly black fissures cut through the ice, with jagged, sharp edges and strong contrast. To the left, scattered across a slightly raised and striated area, are dozens of small circular craters: some appear bright with raised rims and soft inner shadows, others are simple dark pits. Near the upper left corner, a larger isolated dome-like crater stands out, casting a crisp shadow that emphasizes its three-dimensional form. Thin linear ridges and grooves crisscross the scene, some straight and others winding, forming a tectonic network over the ice. Lateral lighting sculpts every bump and ridge with delicate shadows, revealing a complex micro-topography. There is no horizon or sky, only an endless expanse of cracked, pitted frozen ground extending beyond the frame.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the dark fractures on the right and follow their jagged path toward the center. Then move left to compare the bright, rimmed craters with the flatter dark pits. Notice how thin ridges cross over and under craters, revealing which features formed first.
ContextContexto
This scientific image, titled «Small Craters on Europa», is credited to NASA/JPL and dated May 21, 1998, according to data from the NASA Image and Video Library. It was likely acquired by the Galileo mission, which explored Jupiter and its moons from 1995 to 2003. Europa is an ice-covered moon thought to harbor a subsurface ocean, and its surface is remarkably young and sparsely cratered compared to other moons. The view shows small impact craters and fractures in detail, helping scientists estimate surface age and understand impact and ice tectonics. No further details about the exact location on Europa are given in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso
Europa has very few large craters because its icy crust is constantly renewing itself; most of its surface is estimated to be only about 60 million years old, which is very young in geological terms.

I focus on the texture: this is a black-and-white scientific photograph, with tones ranging from light gray to medium gray and deep black. I see a rugged, porous and cracked terrain, like dried plaster. What stands out most are those two dark fissures crossing diagonally from the lower right corner, with irregular, sharp edges. Around them there are ridges, grooves and small craters with soft shadows. The side lighting reveals all the relief and makes me think about how fragile this fractured ice is.

Looking at this top-down view of Europa, the icy moon of Jupiter, I get excited to recognize what we learned from the Galileo mission. This NASA/JPL image from May 21, 1998 shows ground with no horizon, just ice as far as the eye can see. I see dozens of small craters and a larger one at the upper left, with a crisp shadow. The linear ridges and intersecting grooves speak of tectonics. It is a young terrain, sparsely cratered, with a possible ocean below, and each small pit helps us estimate its age.

It looks like the snow in my yard when I step on it and it cracks! Everything is light gray and dark gray, like salt or dried plaster, and there is no sky, just ground everywhere. I see two super big black cracks that look like an open mouth in the ice. On the left there are lots of little round pits, like when you toss pebbles into sand, and one bigger one alone at the top. There are also little lines crossing like roads. I want to count all the tiny craters one by one.
