What you would seeLo que verías
The work is a five-panel collage on a deep black background capturing the transit of Io, one of Jupiter's moons, across the giant planet. Three larger panels arranged diagonally across the center and upper right dominate the view, showing Jupiter's banded atmosphere in pale beige, soft slate blue and creamy white, with delicate swirls, streaks and small storm eddies. Two small dark dots hover over the cloud bands in each panel: Io itself, a mottled yellowish-brown sphere, and its perfectly round, jet-black shadow cast onto the jovian clouds. The distance between moon and shadow shifts subtly from panel to panel, conveying motion. At lower left, a smaller, darker panel shows Io isolated in black space, faintly lit, with just the curved limb of Jupiter entering the frame at the bottom right. At lower right, a magnified inset presents Io as a vivid violet and yellow world blotched with sulfur deposits, with a white arrow labeling the erupting Pillan Volcano. Lighting is crisp and airless, with extreme contrast between the void of space and the luminous, gaseous palette of Jupiter.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the three central panels and track Io and its shadow gliding over Jupiter's bands. Then shift to the distant view at left to grasp the scale. Finish on the enlarged violet and yellow close-up of Io, where a tiny dot becomes an active volcanic world.
ContextContexto
The image is credited to NASA/JPL/STScI and was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope on May 21, 1999, according to source data. It documents Io, the most volcanically active body in the Solar System, transiting Jupiter. Hubble was able to resolve both the moon and its shadow on the gas giant's cloud tops. The lower-right inset highlights the Pillan volcano, a major eruptive center on Io. The medium is scientific space photography, processed for research and public outreach. Authorship and date are confirmed by the source; further observational details are not provided.

Curious detailDato curioso
Io hosts hundreds of active volcanoes powered by tidal heating from Jupiter's immense gravity, making it the most volcanically active body known in the Solar System.

I focus on the assembly: five panels on a deep black #0A0A0A that works like a mat. The three diagonal panels preserve extraordinary sharpness in Jupiter's pale beige #D8D2C3 and bluish gray #8FA3B8 bands. I notice the contrast between two dots per image: yellowish mottled Io and its perfectly round black shadow. The fourth smaller darker frame and the fifth enlarged one with the white arrow pointing to the Pillan volcano show how the image was designed to share science clearly without losing accuracy.

What thrills me is the full transit captured on May 21, 1999 by Hubble. In the three large frames you see Io crossing in front of Jupiter and its shadow cast onto the high clouds. It is not an artistic montage, it is pure orbital mechanics. At lower left you see it in the black void, away from the disk, and at lower right the close-up reveals its violet and yellowish surface from sulfur and the Pillan volcano erupting. A moment that shows why Io is the most volcanic moon we know.

It looks like a game of cards in black space. At the top there are three big pictures of Jupiter that looks like a giant marble with cream and blue stripes. On its stripes there are two little dots chasing each other: a yellowish one that is Io and a black one that is its shadow. They move just a little bit from frame to frame. At the bottom left there is a small picture where Io is alone in the dark and at the bottom right another close-up with spots and a little white arrow that says here is the Pillan volcano going boom!

In each of the three large diagonal frames, how many dark little dots do you see over Jupiter's bands if you count both Io and its shadow?
HintPista
Look carefully at each large Jupiter: there is a yellowish little sphere and a perfect black circle very close to each other.
#2
What color is the background that surrounds all the panels of the collage and makes Jupiter look so bright?
HintPista
It is the color of the void of space, the same you see in the small frame where Io floats alone.
#3
In the enlarged frame at the bottom right, what surface feature of Io does the white arrow point to?
HintPista
Find the violet and yellowish close-up of Io: the arrow marks a spot famous for its sulfur eruptions.
