What you would seeLo que verías

At the center, the partial disk of Jupiter floats against a deep, velvety black expanse of space. The planet displays horizontal atmospheric bands in cream, golden ochre, pale beige and smoky white, with soft swirls and winds stretched like oil brushstrokes. Toward the southeast of the disk lies the Great Red Spot, an elongated oval in salmon-orange with a lighter center and a delicate inner ring. Around the main sphere, eight smaller rectangular insets arc like a chronological constellation, each framing the Red Spot at a slightly different moment with subtle variations in shape, depth of orange and texture of the surrounding clouds. Some thumbnails show grayish and bluish-green rims, others reveal turbulent filaments and feathery wakes. In the upper right corner the text «Jupiter's Great Red Spot» appears in light serif type, and in the lower left the «Hubble Heritage» wordmark is visible. The light is diffuse and planetary, without harsh shadows, with a gaseous, fluid texture that conveys immense scale and continuous motion.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the large central Jupiter and locate the Red Spot, then follow the arc of thumbnails from top to bottom as if turning pages of a diary. Compare the hue of the oval's core and the thickness of the white filaments around it; those small differences tell the story of the weather on another world.

ContextContexto

According to data from the NASA Image and Video Library, this work is titled «Hubble Views Ancient Storm in the Atmosphere of Jupiter - Montage», dated August 24, 1999 and credited to the Hubble Heritage Team at STScI/AURA/NASA and Amy Simon at Cornell University, with credit to NASA/JPL. It is listed as a photograph / scientific image in the Space and Science category. The montage pairs a global view of Jupiter with detailed crops of its most famous storm. The Great Red Spot is a long-lived anticyclone that has been observed for centuries, continuously for probably more than 150 years. The source does not specify the exact time interval between each inset, but together they illustrate the evolution of the planet's atmosphere.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Hubble Space Telescope has orbited Earth since 1990 at about 547 kilometers altitude, and while the Great Red Spot was once wide enough to hold two Earths in the 19th century, it has been notably shrinking, a change that montages like this help scientists track year by year.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

From my workbench I am fascinated by how this montage preserves a living phenomenon without touching it. Jupiter's disk shows horizontal bands in cream, golden ochre and smoky white that look like diluted oil brushstrokes, with soft swirls stretched by wind. The Great Red Spot stands out as a salmon orange oval with a lighter center and a delicate ring. The eight small frames around it work like conservation samples over time, each with subtle variations in intensity and texture that reveal the fragility of what seems eternal.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What excites me most is seeing the history of a storm. At the center Jupiter floats against a deep velvety black background, with pale beige and golden ochre bands like rivers of clouds. The Great Red Spot appears toward the southeast, a huge salmon orange anticyclone active for more than 150 years. The eight inset frames are like a chronological album showing how its shape and color change. It reminds me that with the Hubble Heritage Team we can glimpse gigantic processes, with soft diffuse light and no harsh shadows, from right here.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Jupiter looks like a giant striped marble! It has cream, beige and golden ochre lines that look like someone painted them with a brush. On one side it has an egg shaped orange spot, the Great Red Spot, which is a super huge storm. Around it there are eight little rectangles that are photos of the same spot at different moments, some more orange and others with gray swirls. I like that at the top it says «Jupiter's Great Red Spot» and that everything floats in the black space.
