What you would seeLo que verías
The image is a scientific diagram on a black background, arranged in two rows with four illustrations explaining Europa's interior. On the left, top and bottom, the same sphere is shown with a quarter cut away to reveal internal layers. At the center, a small rough gray sphere labeled «Metallic Core» represents the metallic core. It is surrounded by a thick ochre-brown layer labeled «Rocky Interior» and, on the outside, a thinner bluish-white layer labeled «H₂O Layer» that forms the icy surface, with yellowish tints and subtle cracks. Two red lines connect a small boxed area of the crust to an enlarged detail on the right. The upper detail shows a three-dimensional block of ice: on top a grayish, heavily fractured crust labeled «Cold Brittle Surface Ice» and below a translucent ice with pale blue and white vertical streaks, labeled «Warm Convecting Ice», extending to a dark base. The lower detail shows the same upper crust but, underneath, a uniform intense blue liquid labeled «Liquid Ocean Under Ice», resting on a dark reddish rocky seafloor. All labels are in English with thin white arrows in sans serif type. The lighting is clean and instructional, typical of a space agency infographic, with no dramatic shadows and a clear educational purpose.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the two cutaway spheres on the left to grasp the three layers, then follow the red lines to the enlarged blocks on the right. Compare the pale, streaky blue of the convecting ice on top with the solid, deep blue of the liquid ocean below; that shift in texture and color holds the main hypothesis.
ContextContexto
The image comes from the NASA Image and Video Library, credited to NASA/JPL and dated January 18, 1999, titled «Model of Europa Subsurface Structure». It presents two hypothetical models for the H₂O layer of Europa, one of Jupiter's Galilean moons. The upper model proposes a thick ice shell with warm convecting ice at depth; the lower proposes a liquid water ocean beneath an ice covering. These ideas are based on data from the Galileo mission, which explored Jupiter and its moons in the 1990s. It is not known for certain which model is accurate, and research continues with later missions. The image is an educational illustration, not a direct photograph of the interior.

I focus on how this infographic is built to last and be understood. The deep black background makes the four illustrations and the English labels with white arrows stand out. I see two cutaway spheres on the left revealing the gray metallic core, the ochre rocky interior, and the H₂O layer in blue and off-white. Red lines connect the enlarged crust detail: on top cold brittle cracked ice over warm convecting ice, below an intense blue liquid ocean over reddish dark rock.

This NASA/JPL image from January 18, 1999 excites me because it summarizes what Galileo hinted about Europa, Jupiter's moon. On the left the global model with its three layers, and on the right two hypotheses for the water layer. On top, thick ice with warm convection and no visible liquid ocean; below, an ocean under ice. Neither model is definitive, they are ideas based on 1990s data. It leaves me thinking about an icy world that might hide liquid water.

It looks like they sliced Europa open like a giant ice pop to see what is inside. In the middle there is a small gray ball that is the core, then a brown layer like soil and outside a blue and white ice layer. The funniest part are the two zooms on the right. One has cracked ice on top and underneath light-blue ice with little streaks that moves. The other has a very blue sea hidden under the ice, over dark red rock.
