What you would seeLo que verías

The piece is a mosaic of twelve black-and-white satellite photographs arranged in a grid of four rows and three columns, separated by thin white margins. Each frame shows a different fragment of the Martian surface seen from directly above, with low-angle illumination that casts soft shadows and emphasizes topography. There is no human figure or explicit scale in the visual foreground, only terrain. Impact craters with circular rims and smooth or rough floors, plains dotted with small pits, dunes and fissures, and linear scarps such as the one in Ares Vallis at the lower right are visible. The palette is monochrome, ranging from near-white on sunlit rims to charcoal gray in shadowed depressions, with textures alternating between granular and velvety, smooth and rubbly. At the bottom of each image a small white label identifies the location: Southwest Elysium Planitia, Crater Floor West Arabia, Chryse Planitia, Isidis Planitia, Central Arabia Terra, East Tharsis, among others. The overall composition reads like a comparative catalog, each cell inviting close attention to subtle variations in erosion, crater size and density of markings.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Take in the whole grid first to sense the range of textures, then linger on a single frame. Notice how light direction reveals crater depth and compare a smooth floor with a fractured one to read different geological histories.

ContextContexto

According to source data from the NASA Image and Video Library, the set is titled Mars Surfaces at 15.6°N Latitude, March 1999, credited to NASA/JPL/MSSS and published on September 18, 2000. It consists of scientific images acquired by the Mars Global Surveyor orbiter, likely with its Mars Orbiter Camera, which systematically mapped the planet in the late 1990s. Labels denote equatorial and transitional regions between the highlands and lowlands, such as Arabia Terra, Elysium Planitia and Chryse Planitia, all along the 15.6° N parallel. Exact scale for each frame is not given, but the aim is to illustrate morphological diversity along a single latitude band.

Curious detailDato curioso

The images were taken by Mars Global Surveyor, the first successful United States orbiter at Mars in over a decade, whose archive remains a baseline for comparative studies of Martian landforms.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does the abundance of small versus large craters suggest about the relative age of each surface?¿Qué te dice la presencia de muchos cráteres pequeños frente a pocos cráteres grandes sobre la edad de cada superficie?
  2. How does your perception of the landscape change when you realize each frame may span kilometers with no human presence?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción del paisaje al saber que cada recuadro puede abarcar kilómetros sin presencia humana?
  3. What similarities and differences do you see between these Martian deserts and satellite views of deserts on Earth?¿Qué similitudes y diferencias encuentras entre estos desiertos marcianos y los desiertos vistos desde satélite en la Tierra?

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I focus on the material quality of this mosaic of twelve black and white images arranged in four rows by three columns. The thin white borders separating each frame are not decorative, they are visual breathing space that keeps the grays from blending into one another. I notice the range from almost pure white to charcoal gray and how the low-angle light reveals granular and velvety textures. The small white labels at the bottom are fragile, any loss of contrast would make them unreadable.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

From my backyard telescope I never see this level of detail, so this catalog at 15.6° N fascinates me. These are twelve overhead windows onto equatorial regions like Arabia Terra, Elysium Planitia and Chryse Planitia, all at the same latitude but with different stories. One frame shows a crater with a smooth floor, another a plain dotted with tiny pits, and in the lower right corner the linear scarp of Ares Vallis. With no human scale, I understand that the Mars Global Surveyor probe gave us a lesson in comparative geology.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like twelve photos of the Moon but they told me it is Mars and there are no people there. I like to look for circles, there are big craters with rims and lots of tiny little holes as if someone poked the ground with a pencil. Everything is in gray, from light to dark, and each photo has its name below in white letters. My favorite is the one at the bottom right because it has a long line like a scar. If you put them all together they look like a space sticker album.
