What you would seeLo que verías
This infrared view presents the crowded heart of the Milky Way as a dense, horizontal tapestry of light and dust. Slightly below the middle, a brilliant whitish core glows with concentrated intensity, anchoring a luminous band that stretches from left to right across the frame. That band is speckled with countless tiny stars — white, pale blue and golden pinpricks of varying brightness — embedded in sprawling, smoky clouds of deep red, crimson and burnt orange. The reddish nebulosity appears filamentary and translucent in places, with tattered edges, dark knots and opaque patches where dust obscures background stars. Toward the top and bottom edges the scene deepens to a dark indigo and midnight blue, still densely peppered with stars, creating a granular, sandy texture of light. There is no harsh directional light or shadow; instead a diffuse, hazy radiance permeates the field. Arched filaments, small bubbles and denser clumps punctuate the composition, suggesting turbulent gas structures. No human scale is present; the image conveys overwhelming vastness, as if looking through a veil of glowing embers into an endless stellar sea.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the bright whitish center and trace the reddish band outward to grasp the scale. Linger on the contrast between the translucent red filaments and the dark dust lanes that interrupt them; those gaps reshape the distribution of stars. Compare the deep blue periphery to the ruddy interior to see how color marks dust density and stellar crowding.
ContextContexto
This is a scientific infrared image from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, released on January 10, 2006 by NASA/JPL-Caltech, according to source data. It depicts the crowded, swirling core of our spiral Milky Way galaxy, containing hundreds of thousands of stars. Infrared light penetrates much of the dust that blocks visible light toward the galactic center, making otherwise hidden stellar populations and dust structures visible. The image is part of the NASA Image and Video Library and represents early 21st-century space exploration and infrared astronomy. No cultural attribution beyond the scientific institution is recorded.

Curious detailDato curioso
Spitzer detected infrared light invisible to human eyes, so the reds, whites and blues in this picture are false-color translations that encode infrared brightness into visible hues to reveal dust and star structures.

I focus on what infrared reveals: that light that cuts through dust and lets us see what is hidden. I look at the compact whitish core and the diffuse horizontal band, with reddish clouds with frayed edges in crimson and burnt orange tones. I am drawn to the granular texture, like luminous sand, and how the deep midnight blue at the edges contrasts with the warm veils. There are no hard shadows, just diffuse glow and dust that blocks and filters. It is a 2006 scientific image, but its visual materiality calls for care, as if cosmic dust were an old varnish.

This Spitzer view from January 10, 2006 thrills me because we finally see the crowded heart of the Milky Way. In visible light dust hides everything, but in infrared that cauldron of hundreds of thousands of stars and arched filaments appears. At the center, slightly below, that very luminous whitish core marks the galactic center, and around it stretches the band of white and bluish stars against a midnight blue background. The red clouds and dark bubbles are gas and dust in motion. Feeling that vastness with no horizon reminds me why I look up every night.

It looks like someone spilled glitter across the sky and then blew red smoke everywhere. In the middle there is a little white ball that shines a lot, like a lamp in the mist. On the sides there are so many little white and blue dots you cannot count them, and red clouds that look like lava or shredded strawberry cotton candy. At the top and bottom everything turns midnight blue, almost black. There is no ground or houses, just stars everywhere. It gives me tingles to think we are seeing the center of our galaxy, like the belly button of space.
