What you would seeLo que verías

A top-down satellite view of a rugged alpine massif dominated by snow and ice. The center and southeast are covered by a large, irregular white and pale gray mass with folded textures, crevasses and dark striations that trace the slow movement of glacial ice. Two narrow, sinuous glacier tongues curve southward into green valleys, their surfaces marked by grayish debris lines. The ice varies from bright white on sunlit ridges to soft bluish gray in shadowed depressions, with a granular, cracked appearance. Surrounding terrain is a deep, saturated green of forested slopes and steep valleys, cut by narrow ridges and faint pale lines of roads or rivers barely visible at this scale. In the upper left, two elongated lakes of deep navy blue interrupt the green, their surfaces dark and smooth. Scattered small white clouds with soft shadows dot the northern and southwestern areas. The illumination is even and high-altitude daylight, with no horizon, emphasizing a vast, map-like pattern where natural forms look both abstract and sharply topographic.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the bright central ice field and trace the two winding glacier tongues flowing south, then pull back to notice the contrast between stark white ice, deep green valleys and the dark blue lakes to the north to grasp the glacier's immense scale.

ContextContexto

The image shows the Aletsch Glacier, the largest glacier in Europe, covering over 120 square kilometers in southern Switzerland. It was acquired on July 23, 2001 by ASTER, the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer on NASA's Terra satellite, launched in December 1999 and built by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. According to source data, the Märjelensee glacier lake lies at its eastern end at 2,350 meters, the Aletschhorn peak rises to 4,195 meters to the west, and the Rhône River flows along the southern flank. The picture is part of a long-term Earth observation effort to map and monitor planetary surface change with 14 spectral bands.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Aletsch Glacier holds about 11 billion tons of ice and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, the year this view was taken, and ASTER imagery has since become a key tool for tracking its retreat.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does seeing such a vast and fragile landscape from orbit change your sense of its vulnerability?¿Qué sensaciones produce ver un paisaje tan inmenso y frágil desde la altura de un satélite?
  2. What does the slow, river-like flow of ice visible from space tell us about time in nature?¿Cómo cambia nuestra idea de naturaleza al verla como un flujo lento de hielo que se mueve durante siglos?
  3. How might this 2001 portrait compare to a present-day image of the same glacier?¿Qué nos dice esta imagen sobre el cambio climático si la comparamos con fotos actuales del mismo lugar?

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I focus on the rugged texture of the ice, with its folds, crevasses and dark streaks that reveal the glacier flow. I notice the shift from pure white to bluish gray caused by shadows and sediments, in contrast with the intense green of valleys and slopes. It is a scientific image with uniform daylight that must be preserved intact, because it documents the largest glacier in Europe at a kilometer scale and allows us to monitor changes without altering the original surface.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

From my telescope I dreamed of this overhead view and here it is thanks to NASA's Terra satellite and its ASTER instrument, which captured the Aletsch Glacier on July 23, 2001. I love thinking about the 14 spectral bands mapping Earth and the kilometer scale where rivers and roads become thin lines. I can spot the 4,195 meter Aletschhorn to the west, Lake Märjelensee at 2,350 meters to the east and the Rhône River to the south, all lit without a horizon as only seen from orbit.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant melting ice cream! I see a big white and gray patch all bumpy with wrinkles and little black lines in the middle of very green mountains. Two long curvy tongues slide down like white snakes toward the valleys. At the top left there are two dark blue little lakes and nearby some fluffy white clouds like cotton with their tiny shadows. Everything is seen from very high up, like a toy map taken from space on a sunny day.
