What you would seeLo que verías
The image consists of four scientific panels labeled a, b, c and d in a two-by-two grid on a white background. Each panel shows an identical frame with Cartesian axes: the horizontal axis is R over r from 0.0 to 3.0 and the vertical is z over r. Inside, the field is deep black, crossed by thin vertical white lines representing the magnetic field, slightly bent toward the lower left corner where the black hole sits. Over the black, a glowing cloud evolves: in a it is a faint reddish haze at the bottom; in b it grows to intense red; in c and d it expands and brightens to orange, yellow and brilliant white near the core, marking rising electromagnetic power. Small white arrows indicate plasma velocity and direction as it falls inward. At the bottom a color bar runs from black through red, orange and yellow to white, labeled 0.01 to 1.00. The lighting is synthetic, without natural shadows, with a slightly pixelated digital texture typical of late-1990s computer visualization, giving the impression of heat mapped data rather than a photograph.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at panel a at upper left and follow alphabetical order to d to track the brightening. Watch how straight white lines begin to twist near the white-hot spot at lower left, that winding is the key to energy ejection. Check the color scale below to connect white with peak power.
ContextContexto
This is a scientific visualization released by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory on November 30, 1999, cataloged as PIA04206. According to source data, it shows a start-to-finish computer simulation of plasma falling toward a rotating black hole. White lines denote the magnetic field, while red and white shading shows electromagnetic power ejected along the poles. The four-step sequence illustrates how the spinning hole twists space and field lines to eventually power jet formation. The computation was performed on supercomputers at Japan's National Institute for Fusion Science. It is an early example of computational astrophysics made public as outreach imagery.

Curious detailDato curioso
The simulation visualizes the Blandford–Znajek process, theorized in 1977, in which a spinning black hole can tap its rotational energy through magnetic fields to launch powerful jets.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I am fascinated that this piece is a born-digital visualization from 1999 and not a photograph. I see four panels labeled a, b, c and d with axes R over r and z over r. The background is deep black with white magnetic field lines curving toward the lower left corner. The plasma cloud shifts from a faint reddish glow to bright white according to the bar from 0.01 to 1.00. Its pixelated texture and saturated colors speak to nineties supercomputers and to how we preserve early digital files.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
For me this two by two grid is pure wonder. Each panel shows the same frame with plasma falling toward a spinning black hole located at the bottom left. The white arrows show the speed of the material and the vertical lines are the magnetic field twisted by space itself. I love watching the step from a to d, when intense red turns to orange, yellow and white, a sign of electromagnetic power expelled through the poles. It is NASA JPL outreach that makes the invisible visible.

They look like four little magic windows with a background black as deep night. In the first one there is a tiny red cloud at the bottom and in the last one it is already a big yellow and bright white blot, like space lava. There are thin white upright lines and little arrows showing where everything falls, toward the bottom corner. The little color bar at the bottom looks like ice pops going from black to red and then to white. I like counting a, b, c and d as if it were a story.
