What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of a deep, star-filled black field floats a symmetrical, luminous form that resembles the body of an ant seen from above. Two main bulbous lobes touch at a narrow waist; they glow in pale shades of bluish white, cream and pearly pink, with textures suggesting expanding gas and delicate bubbling surfaces. From that tight central pinch, two much fainter and more diffuse horizontal extensions stretch outward, like wings or fans of dust in muted tones of teal green, ochre and dusty red that fade into the void. Fine dark veins and thread-like filaments trace the structure, marking ripples and knots. The background is speckled with hundreds of pinpoint stars of varying brightness and color, some showing cross-shaped diffraction spikes characteristic of telescope optics. The light appears to come from within the nebula itself, with an intense whitish core. The scale is cosmic and immense, yet the detail feels intimate: every swirl of gas and every stellar speck invites a pause.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two bright central lobes and then follow the horizontal axis outward toward the faint tips that dissolve into darkness. Notice how the glow shifts from solid to gauzy and look for the tiny knots and dark filaments that reveal how stellar material was ejected.

ContextContexto

This image was taken with the NASA Hubble Space Telescope and released on December 10, 1999, by NASA and the Space Telescope Science Institute. According to the source information, it shows the so-called Ant Nebula, a celestial object whose study may shed light on the eventual fate of our Sun. It is a bipolar nebula, a cloud of gas expelled by a star in the late stages of its evolution. No individual artist or cultural attribution applies, as it is a scientific photograph. The image is processed to enhance the structures and colors of the glowing gas.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Ant Nebula's remarkably symmetrical and pinched shape is unusual and is probably sculpted by the gravity of a companion star that shapes the outflowing gas jets.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What makes this cloud of gas feel like a living creature, an ant, even though you know it is inanimate matter?¿Qué te hace percibir esta nube de gas como un ser vivo, como una hormiga, aunque sabes que es materia inerte?
  2. How does your sense of time shift knowing this light traveled for thousands of years before being recorded in 1999?¿Cómo cambia tu sensación del tiempo al saber que esta luz viajó miles de años para ser registrada en 1999?
  3. If this could be a preview of the Sun's future, what feelings does the life cycle of stars stir in you?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I am fascinated by how this Hubble photograph reveals fragility and violence at once. I see two pale lobes touching at a narrow waist, as if gas had inflated gently. The greenish and ochre veils opening to the sides look like suspended layers of dust, with dark filaments marking folds. Everything glows with inner light against a deep black background dotted with stars. It makes me think of translucent materials and how to preserve what is fleeting and luminous.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer this image excites me because it was released on December 10, 1999 by NASA and the Space Telescope Science Institute and shows what will be the end of stars like our Sun. It is nebula Mz 3, called the Ant Nebula for those two symmetric lobes that look like an insect body seen from above. I linger on the faint horizontal extensions and the filaments tracing waves in the expelled gas. Imagining that bipolar cloud growing in the void reminds me how small we are.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant ant floating in space! It has two shiny bellies touching in the middle, colored bluish white and pinkish, like glowing cotton. From its tiny waist come two fuzzy green and reddish wings that fade into darkness. Around it there are so many little stars shining like diamonds on a black sheet. I imagine the little ant is blowing bubbles of light and each dark line is its little path. So pretty and weird!

  1. #1

Besides bluish white and cream, what greenish tone appears in the faint extensions coming from the nebula waist?

    HintPista

Look for the diffuse horizontal fan shapes on the sides, not the bright central lobes.

  2. #2

What color is the deep space background where the whole nebula and the stars float?

    HintPista

It is the color filling everything around and making the pale light of the nebula stand out.
