What you would seeLo que verías
The image is a very wide, rectangular scientific map presented as a single frame against a black background. Across the top, large white letters read “Daytime Temperature.” Below that, the surface of Mars stretches in an unfolded horizontal band that spans nearly the full width. The polar regions appear along the edges: at the top, a thin line of intense blue and purple; at the bottom, a broad band of purple and blue followed by a grayish-white strip with a rough texture suggestive of ice or shadowed relief. The central zone—warmer according to the scale—blends yellows, lime greens, soft oranges, and turquoises. Faint circular shapes, craters, plateaus, and patches emerge as if low relief were showing through a translucent layer of color. Toward the left and center, rounded elevations are barely outlined; toward the right, the terrain looks more granular and speckled. There are no natural shadows and no horizon: the “light” here is the color code itself. At the upper left edge, a tiny white arrow peeks in, a leftover trace of an interface. At the bottom, white text reads “AUG 30, 2004,” “Ls 80,” and “p26135.” Beneath those labels sits a horizontal rainbow bar, with purple and blue at the cold end and red at the warm end; the end values are partially legible as −125 °C and 30 °C.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the rainbow scale at the bottom, then read the planet from the purple edges toward the yellow-green center. Notice how faint craters and plateaus emerge beneath the color layer. The white strip at the bottom changes the reading: it is not just an abstract gradient, but a cold, textured polar region.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, this piece is titled *Five Years of Monitoring Mars Daytime Surface Temperatures Animation*, credited to NASA/JPL/ASU, dated September 19, 2005, and held by NASA's Image and Video Library under the JPL department. It is a scientific photograph/image showing daytime surface temperatures on Mars. The frame visible here is dated August 30, 2004, and is marked “Ls 80” and “p26135.” The source does not specify which instrument acquired the measurements or which exact orbit this frame belongs to, so those details are not known from the record alone. It probably forms part of a sequence used to compare seasonal thermal changes.

Curious detailDato curioso
“Ls” is the solar longitude: a 0° to 360° seasonal clock for Mars that marks the planet's position along its orbit, widely used to compare observations made in different Martian years.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- What changes in our idea of Mars when a planet is shown as temperature rather than as visible landscape?¿Qué cambia en nuestra idea de Marte cuando un planeta se muestra como temperatura y no como paisaje visible?
- Which regions draw your attention first, and is that because of their color or because of what you know about heat and cold?¿Qué regiones te llaman primero la atención y por qué: por su color o por lo que sabes del calor y el frío?
- What is gained and what is lost when a full day of measurements is compressed into a single still frame from an animation?¿Qué se gana y qué se pierde cuando un día de mediciones se resume en un solo fotograma de una animación?

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I look at how the image is built: it is a very long horizontal strip on a black background with the title Daytime Temperature in white, not a natural photograph. Color is code, not paint. At the top a thin blue and purple line marks the north pole; at the bottom a wide purple, blue and grayish white band with a rough texture suggests ice. The rainbow bar from −125 °C to 30 °C is the key to read yellows, greens and turquoises without inventing shadows.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
As an amateur astronomer I love seeing Mars turned into a heat map. This unfolded strip from August 30, 2004, labeled Ls 80 and p26135, uses false color to show daytime heat: purple and blue mean polar cold and yellow and orange mean temperate zones. Craters and plateaus peek through the translucent layer. The sheet does not tell us the exact instrument, but we can tell it belongs to a five-year animation to compare seasons.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a super long candy bar in space! At the top it says Daytime Temperature in white letters and at the bottom there is another rainbow bar going from cold purple to hot red. Mars is painted yellow, lime green and turquoise, as if someone sprinkled glitter on it. On the edges there is ice: a thin blue line on top and a rough grayish white blanket at the bottom. I like hunting for craters that look like freckles hidden under the colors.
