What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of a deep, velvety black background floats an elongated, irregular shape, tilted diagonally from upper right to lower left: the galaxy UGC 10445. Its body is not sharp but diffuse and pixelated, like a cloud of milky ink dissolved in dark water, with tones ranging from bright bluish-white at the core to pearl gray and smoky blue at the edges. Inside it stand out four or five luminous knots, almost white with a pale blue halo, which are intense star-forming regions; two in the lower part are denser and one in the upper part looks split into twin spots. Around the galactic halo there is a dark blue mottled veil, grainy, with the texture of digital noise. To the left, outside the galaxy, three round, warm orange and yellow dots contrast strongly with the cold blue: they are foreground stars from our own Milky Way. The image has low resolution, with visible pixels and soft edges, typical of a space-based ultraviolet sensor. The scale is cosmic yet intimate, with no human reference, and the light appears suspended in absolute darkness.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the bluish-white knots at the center and follow their diagonal alignment. Then compare the cold, diffuse blue of the galaxy with the warm orange dots on the left; that contrast reveals what belongs to the distant galaxy and what are nearby stars. Notice the grain in the background: it is detector noise from the ultraviolet sensor, part of the visual language of science.

ContextContexto

This is an ultraviolet color image of the spiral galaxy UGC 10445, taken by NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) space telescope on June 7 and June 14, 2003, and released on July 25, 2003 by NASA/JPL/Caltech. According to the source data, the galaxy is located about 40 million light-years from Earth. GALEX was a mission dedicated to observing the universe in ultraviolet light to study star formation. The colors are not as the human eye would see them: they represent ultraviolet intensity translated into visible light, where blue and white indicate young, hot stars.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Galaxy Evolution Explorer that captured this image could detect stars formed just a few million years ago thanks to its sensitivity to ultraviolet light, a form of light invisible to the human eye and blocked by Earth's atmosphere, which is why it had to observe from space.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does your idea of a galaxy change when you see it in invisible light instead of natural colors?¿Cómo cambia tu idea de una galaxia al verla en luz invisible en vez de en colores naturales?
  2. What does the contrast between the warm nearby dots and the cold distant cloud make you feel?¿Qué te hace sentir el contraste entre los puntos cálidos cercanos y la nube fría y lejana?
  3. If you were a sensor that only sees ultraviolet light, what stories of the universe would you tell?

I see an elongated, diffuse cloud suspended on a velvety black, crossing the image diagonally. The center is bluish white and opens into pearl grays and smoky blues toward the edges. I pause on its fragile texture, like milky ink in water, with visible grain and pixels typical of an ultraviolet sensor. It must be cared for like a delicate photograph, because that faint light comes from very far away and even the digital noise is already part of its story.

This is UGC 10445, a spiral about 40 million light years away seen here in ultraviolet light thanks to GALEX, the NASA telescope that observed between June 7 and 14, 2003. What shines white with a pale blue halo is not its full shape, but its young and hot stars. I count four or five knots of intense star formation, two denser at the bottom and one double at the top. The three orange dots on the left are not part of it, they are foreground stars from our own Milky Way.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a glowing jellyfish swimming in a huge dark pool. It is lying on its side and has little white lights with pale blue that look like sparkles. At the bottom there are two very close together that shine brighter and at the top there are twin dots. I like that the background is super black, so it stands out more. On the left there are three orange and yellow marbles that do not belong to the jellyfish, they are like intruders. It looks a bit blurry, as if taken with a magic space camera.
