What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of a deep, velvety black background stretches diagonally a huge inclined spiral galaxy seen at an angle, occupying almost the full height of the frame with its major axis running from northwest to southeast. Its nucleus is a compact, warm, whitish-yellow bright spot radiating a diffuse halo. Around it opens an oval, dusky disk threaded with dust lanes and speckled with thousands of whitish-blue points that trace the spiral arms; the disk edges look mottled, like luminous frost, denser and brighter toward the northwest. The surrounding sky is sprinkled with countless field stars in golden, pale yellow and bluish-white tones, varying in brightness and size, some with a soft glow. The overall outline is not rectangular but scalloped with overlapping circular lobes, the imprint of a mosaic of pointings. Light is cool in the young arms and warm in the central bulge; texture combines the fine grain of interstellar dust with the crisp sparkle of star clusters. At first glance the scene feels still and empty, but on quiet looking the whirling structure and three-dimensional depth of the system emerge clearly.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the luminous diagonal of the galaxy from the bright nucleus toward the bluish tips of the arms. Then pause on the contrast between the warm central bulge and the cool, grainy crown of young stars. Finally notice the scalloped mosaic edges and the carpet of golden background stars that show you are looking through our own galaxy toward Andromeda.

ContextContexto

Scientific image taken by NASA’s Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) and released on December 10, 2003, credited to NASA/JPL/California Institute of Technology. It shows the large Andromeda Galaxy, known as Messier 31, the most massive galaxy in the Local Group that includes the Milky Way. The frame comes from the NASA Image and Video Library and is catalogued as a photograph / scientific image in the Space and science category, JPL department. The source description emphasizes its character as an ultraviolet observation to study galactic evolution. No further details about exposure or specific processing are given in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso

Andromeda, about 2.5 million light-years away, is the nearest large spiral to the Milky Way and is visible to the naked eye as a faint smudge under very dark skies; GALEX observed it in ultraviolet light to highlight recent star-forming regions that appear bluish in the image.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I look at this print as a fragile physical object. The deep velvety black background almost feels like velvet that absorbs light and makes the fine grain of interstellar dust stand out. The yellowish white nucleus at the center radiates a warm compact halo, while the spiral arms are traced with bluish white dots like luminous frost. I am drawn to the edge cut into circular lobes, the trace of the GALEX mosaic, which reveals how the image was built piece by piece. Its cold and warm light requires stable conservation.

This is our giant neighbor seen by NASA’s Galaxy Evolution Explorer on December 10, 2003. It is Messier 31, the most massive in the Local Group that also contains the Milky Way. We see it tilted diagonally, from northwest to southeast, filling almost the entire height. The warm central bulge contrasts with the cold bluish light of the young arms where stars are born. Each speckled dot on the edges is a star cluster. The circular mosaic reveals the effort to capture its immensity in ultraviolet to understand galactic evolution.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a bright smudge in the middle of darkness, as if someone blew glitter onto black paper. In the center there is a little yellow dot that shines a lot, like the heart of the galaxy. Around it there is an oval cloud with light blue dots that make swirls. The edges look like frost that shines brighter on one side. Behind it there are many little golden stars scattered everywhere. And the photo is not square, it is shaped like bubbles stuck together, as if it were made from several circles.
