What you would seeLo que verías
Near the lower right center, an elongated galaxy floats diagonally like a luminous splinter against deep black velvet dusted with golden speckles. Its body is a mosaic of intense bluish-white and smoky gray, with a grainy, sparkling texture where each fleck marks a cluster of young stars. Light concentrates into a bright white core toward the north and frays southward into faint, vaporous filaments that dissolve into darkness. At the galaxy's northern end a distinct dark patch interrupts the glow, a «hole» where brightness vanishes and the black background shows through as if bitten away. The surrounding space is densely freckled with hundreds of tiny stars in pale yellow and white. In the upper left, a vertical string of pale blue and white smudges hangs above the main galaxy like bubbles. To the right, two isolated dots shine: one pale sky blue and one warm amber yellow. The image has a soft photographic grain and diffuse halos, dominated by cool tones that stand out sharply against the absolute black of the void, conveying immense scale and solitude.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the main galaxy and its mottled blue-white sparkle. Then move to the dark northern «hole» and notice how absence defines structure. Finally trace the faint chain of background galaxies at upper left to grasp the layered depth of near and far in a single frame.
ContextContexto
This image of the dwarf spiral galaxy NGC 247 was taken by NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer on October 13, 2003, in a single orbit exposure of 1600 seconds, as documented by NASA/JPL-California Institute of Technology. The dark region near the top of the galaxy is a zone with a deficit of gas, leading to lower star formation and reduced ultraviolet brightness. NGC 247 lies about 9 million light years from the Milky Way, while the string of background galaxies to the northeast is about 355 million light years distant. The faint blue light seen between the upper two background galaxies may suggest they are merging. The bright yellowish star sometimes seen at the edge in optical views is a foreground star in our own galaxy.

Curious detailDato curioso
Because Galaxy Evolution Explorer imaged in ultraviolet light, which is invisible to the human eye, the blue and white tones are false-color translations that highlight hot, young stars and star-forming regions.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- How does the contrast between brilliant light and empty darkness affect your sense of scale?¿Qué te hace sentir el contraste entre el brillo intenso de la galaxia y el negro total que la rodea?
- If a dark patch means missing gas to form new stars, what does that tell you about how galaxies change over time?

The conservatorLa restauradora
I pause on the texture of this ultraviolet image: that mosaic of bluish whites and smoky grays is not a smudge, it is the real photographic grain of a 1600 second exposure. I see how light concentrates dense and white in the upper core and then frays to the south into vapory filaments. What speaks to me most as a conservator is the dark «hole» at the top: it is not dust on the lens, it is a lack of gas and young stars, an emptiness that does not shine. It is the trace of what never formed.

What GALEX captured on October 13, 2003 thrills me because it is light our eyes cannot see. In ultraviolet, that diagonal sliver shines where young stars are born, hence the intense bluish white tones. The dark zone at the top is a gas deficit: without gas there is no stellar birth and no glow. And look at the scale: NGC 247 is 9 million light years away, but the little chain of pale blue spots at the upper left is 355 million light years away. In a single frame, you see the neighborhood and the deep background.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a shiny feather floating on a black blanket full of golden glitter. The galaxy is like a splinter of ice with white and blue sparkles and in the middle it has a dark bite, as if someone took a bite out of it and you can see the black background. At the upper left little blue bubbles hang like tiny balloons and to the right there are two dots, one blue and one yellow like honey. I like that the brightest part is at the top and at the bottom it turns into little smoke that fades away.

If you look at the tilted galaxy, what color is the most intense light in its upper core and how many isolated dots of contrasting colors shine to its right?
HintPista
Find the whitest center of the luminous sliver and then look toward the right edge of the black velvet.
#2
In the upper left corner over the velvety black background, what shape does the little group of pale blue spots hanging far behind the main galaxy form?
HintPista
It is not part of the large galaxy, it is very far in the background and looks like a hanging row.
#3
Inside the galaxy, in its upper part, what dark zone appears like a bite where there is no glow?
