What you would seeLo que verías
The image is arranged as a triptych, with one large panel on the left and two smaller stacked panels on the right, all set against the deep black of space densely dotted with stars. The main subject, spanning the left panel diagonally from the left edge toward the southeast, is an elongated, winding cloud with a trunk-like, almost creaturely silhouette. In the foreground, its gaseous body looks translucent and billowy, with soft, fraying edges, brighter rims and delicate filaments fading into darkness. Its palette is rich and layered: aqua and teal greens in the central mass, pale pinks and magentas along illuminated ridges, warm ochre and brownish yellow toward the lower tail, and isolated electric blue, magenta and white points marking embedded young stars. The background is a field of pinpoint stars of varying brightness, some with a subtle glow, creating immense depth and a sense of colossal scale. The upper right inset isolates warm dust, rendering the same shape in fiery orange and red against black. The lower right inset shows it in soft pink and lilac with blue stars, emphasizing scattered starlight. Small dark cavities, bright knots and thin dark lanes reward close, lingering attention.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the large left panel and trace the cloud from its rounded head on the left to its wispy tail at the bottom. Then place the two right insets side by side with the main view to see how different wavelengths reveal either hot dust or embedded stars. Finally zoom in on the tiny colored dots inside the cloud, those are newborn stars hidden to visible light.
ContextContexto
This archival image dated December 18, 2003 was captured by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and is credited to NASA/JPL/Caltech via the NASA Image and Video Library. It depicts the Elephant Trunk Nebula, described as an elongated dark globule inside the emission nebula IC 1396 in the constellation Cepheus. The set presents the same region in different wavelengths to highlight protostars forming within the dusty cloud. In general terms, Spitzer's infrared vision allowed astronomers to peer through obscuring dust and study early stellar formation processes. No individual photographer is listed and no further details about the specific observation are provided in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso
Spitzer was one of NASA's Great Observatories and operated primarily in infrared light, letting it see through dense cosmic dust clouds to uncover stellar nurseries like the one in IC 1396.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- How does seeing the same cloud in three different kinds of light change what you think it is made of?¿Qué te sugiere la forma alargada de la nube y por qué le decimos Trompa de Elefante?
- What does the contrast between the dark, empty background and the glowing, textured cloud make you feel about scale and time?¿Cómo cambia tu idea de una estrella si la ves nacer dentro de una nube oscura en lugar de brillar aislada?
- If you could add a fourth view in another type of light or sound, what would you want it to reveal?¿Qué ventajas y límites tiene mirar el mismo objeto con diferentes ojos o longitudes de onda?

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I am fascinated by how this image preserves invisible infrared light and translates it into bluish greens, pale pinks and ochres we would never see with the naked eye. I do not touch pigment but data from Spitzer from December 18, 2003. I linger on the triptych: the large panel with the winding cloud and the two small insets that isolate hot dust and starlight. Every filament and every electric blue dot is information preserved for the future.

This is the Elephant's Trunk Nebula in IC 1396, in Cepheus, and what I see is a stellar nursery laboratory. Spitzer observed in infrared to see through dust and that is why the triptych is key: on the left the full cloud with young embedded stars, at the top right only hot dust in oranges and reds, below scattered starlight in pinks and violets. I love counting the bright knots and dark cavities where protostars are being born.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a bluish green dragon floating in dark space, with a yellow tail and an open mouth. It has little pink and electric blue sparkles that are baby stars hiding in the fluffy cloud. I like that it is three pictures in one: the big one with the whole dragon and two little ones on the right, one orange like fire and the other pink with blue little stars. I want to count the little stars and look for dark little caves.
